And "Trailhounds" are used in "hound trailing" People will have different terms in different areas. I know some of the Cumbrian packs are known as “fell packs” but are still foxhounds. One of my local packs has joint meets sometimes with the Ullswater on the Northumberland fells; the hounds I’ll be watching at Steelrigg are known as both “Fell hounds” and “Trailhounds”. They don’t hunt fox, they race and look finer built than traditional foxhounds. Cheers 2 Quote Link to post

I know in Cumbrian the Fell hound is used for racing and looks much racier than a foxhound, as I said , I’ll try and get some pictures. Cheers. There like the kerry beagle them black and tans ... that's what I'm saying foxhounds up in openground wouldn't be as quick on there feet as a fell hound they were made to hunt the fell tops open ground over rocks I've owned fell hounds give one to a man in Wigan good 7 8 years ago maybe more years ago she was hunting marking Quote Link to post

The trail is laid in a circular route around the fell, then when the hounds are nearing the finish the owners holler and wave towels and such and the hounds come racing in. Cheers. Quote Link to post

Maurice Bell, the old Wensleydale huntsman, had hound racing at his 'day in the dales' shows. I used to love watching the hounds go out, then see them moving as swift white specks over the top of the fells, whilst your also watching the dogs ringside. And finally the race down, to the rattle of buckets. It really was a sight. Many of the owners/racers are hunt supporters, and walk puppies for their local hunt, but kennel and race their own trail hounds as a similar, but separate entity. I've been hunting with the fell packs, since the early 80's, and I love that. But there's nowt wrong with a bit of hound trailing, it's great sport in the summer months. Quote Link to post

People with binoculars watching the race unfold across the fell tops then the mad dash of the run in. Very fit hounds and people who can condition a dog. Theres plenty of people show and race lurchers whose dogs have never seen a rabbit. It has no bearing on my type of lurcher work, but is a good day out in the summer months. Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

I just don't see the point in it tbh if you have a pack of hounds last thing I want them doing is hunting anything bar a fox or out in depths of summer chasing a laid scent rather get the bike out bring them round the road honestly it's like how I say lurcher racing most of them wouldn't of been out in the field or caught a rabbit there's no sport in it to me chasing a bag or chasing scent up the field does nothing for men that keep working dogs and the people at them do you think there any different from Joe public and care if you could hunt or not because they don't there happy chasing a bag or a fake scent up the field Quote Link to post
