Honestly who is bothered whoever it is that takes the job on NOTHING will change the police are not much more than revenue collector's and protectors of the rich and elite .

They are a necessary evil, the UK could have far worse coppers, they could also have far better, they need a shake-up and a clean out @Nicepix what's your take on the 'Dick story?

All police forces, sorry - services ?haven't been headed by police officers for at least 20 years. Dick is typical of the modern Chief Constable in that she will have ridden the quota requirements that saw female and non-white officers being promoted way beyond their ability.

In my old force a female sergeant was tasked with designing the layout of a newly built police station. When we got to work we entered the middle of an L shaped building. Our lockers were at one end and the radios and gas at the other. When you left the building in a hurry to respond to a job you had to run past a line of parked cars belonging to everyone from the janitor to the senior civilian clerk before you got to the response vehicles and dog van.  These issues were brought up at a meeting and she cried. Last time I looked she was Assistant Chief Constable.

Take any police force and look at the operational experience of the senior command team and you will find that collectiveuly it will be less than your average 25 year service bobby. And, many of the decisions they make are more to do with business and politics, but typically they will have joined straight from university with no business or life experience. So, where do they learn about these things? From other senior police officers who also have no life or business experience. And so it goes on.

The last CC I worked under, the one who cannot remember anything about the Rotherham sex scandal, put a price on my head because of the embarrasing questions I posed on the 'Ask The Chief' section of our website. Questions like why he was now selling the idea of merged police forces when he had fiercely opposed it? All that had changed is that now no senior officer positions would be lost, just the specialist services like dogs, traffic, fireams.... i.e. us!   Questions like why had he banned retired police officers from taking civilian jobs as had always been the case? Particularly as our CC was also director of a road safety company that employed retired senior police officers and in his role of head of the ACPO Road Traffic Committee handed out grants to companies like his own and also to his own company. He was wearing three hats and lining several pockets. No wonder he couldn't remember anything that happened at Rotherham.

Unfortunately police forces, sorry - services, are run by people who's sole talent is self promotion. And many of those got helped up the slippery pole by being the right sex or race or sexual orientation required to fill the quotas.

interesting insight there...

I imagine that's the issue with many institutions..services..government bodies and various company's ..not taking advice from long serving staff who know the know

Some of my customers are from education and health care backgrounds. Their stories suggest that the situation is the same. My prdvious neighbours were in the prison service and that was the same. The main concern for managers is being seen to be politically correct, not to improve their services.

I am lucky. I was good at the core role in my job and smart enough to dodge those who weren't and out to cause me trouble. Old fashioned coppers like me had no place in the police after Bliar and Blunkett years. Plastic police and all.
