Foxes were the plan

Recommended Posts

Up at the sheep farm although 90% of the lambs are a good way on now there is still a troublesome fox about bothering stock around the the farm. The farm hand has been baiting a hedge back in a small paddock where the tups will spend the spring, so with a good idea ( or so I thought ) of where it is coming from and a shot of between 50 and 70 yards I took the .17. On arrival I thought I’d walk to the top of the farm where two fields have been left after a failed oilseed rape crop, the amount of bird life in these fields is unbelievable, but a couple of rabbits was what I was after for a Saturday night rabbit curry. It didn’t take long before I got my quarry, both taken at around 90 yards, after gathering them up and as I was starting to loose the light I headed back to the farm to wait for the fox, it was maybe 45 minutes or so before I noticed some very bright eyes through the NV in between the sheep 200 yards away in the opposite direction from where I had anticipated the fox would come from, it started to head up towards me but it wasn’t long before it stopped due to the fact I’d positioned myself expecting it to come from the opposite direction and the moon was now lightning me up, I had a couple of calls but it was very nervous of this so I thought it better to let it trot off and try again, next time with the .243 and get set up on top of the bails overlooking a large area at the back of the farm

That should be lesson learnt about mouse guns. Taking one for foxes is like turning up at a gunfight with a knife.  Stupid boy!?

People may mock this beefed up air rifle, but it shoots some distance to good effect, I’ve shot a lot of foxes with it normally between 70 and 100 yards and last night I shot this little rape muncher at 176 paces, I had to pace it out because I couldn’t believe I hit it ?

Pigeons take a great deal less stopping than a fox, unless they have kevlar vests under them feathers.

Only teasing mate. That's a fair distance.

I have no experience with one so am not really qualified to make any kind of comment.

How do the 20g rounds fair....that's what I would probably look to but I don't know really?

I agree, but these are northern pigeons

I know a lot of people think this isn’t a fox calibre ( although it’s on my ticket for use on fox ) and after using it for a good few years now, I would agree if people are shooting over 100 yards or body shooting, but head shooting under 100 it does the job very well, that said a .22 rim fire would do the job just the same but that’s not a legal fox calibre around these parts

I’ve never used the 20g soft points just because I’ve never seen them in the shop, I have used the 17g hollow point and they do serious damage for such a small round, come to think about it they would probably be better for fox

200yds is fine for Hornet. HMR is the issue here. .243 is better though.

Fox was my plan too. Found a fresh pheasant kill Wednesday night. Same place every spring. I was going get up first light Friday and today but gout returned Thursday night!

Maybe tomorrow. Last night I had to go and park the car near the maize clamp and wait for a crow just so I could do something. I fell asleep in the car due to no sleep from the gout and awoke to birds all over the maize!

Oh and I took a I guess 140yd shot at a woody with the wmr and got feathers only so the hmr definitely won this match ?
