Just a couple last night

Recommended Posts

Now it's actually stopped raining, we went out for a few hours last night. There wasn't much about to start with and we put it down to starting earlier than usual, (about 7ish) so we sat up hoping things would liven up.

Eventually we came across a fox in the distance. It was laying flat on the grass looking at us, about 150 yards away. The target (just her head) looked tiny through the scope but I knew it was safe to shoot as she was down the bottom of a slope from where were were. If I hit, it would be a kill. If i didn't, it would have been a clean miss, so I took the shot.

I sent 53gr downhill and  hit the target. When we got to her, it had hit so hard it has literally knocked tufts of fur off her that were laying in a semi circle round her. I assume she had been moulting anyway, as she wasn't mangy. A big chunky vixen.

I gave the gun to Jack and we went of in pursuit of some more. We spied 3 in the bushes next to a road so we gave them a miss. Time crept by and eventually I spotted another though the thermal. It was quite wary but wasn't in a rush to run off. Jack readied the gun as I lit it up, but by then it had ducked behind a mound. I switched off the lamp and waited till it came out and was broadside so even Jack couldn't miss  and lit it up. A decent shot in the boiler room put it down flat. A dog this time.

We stayed another hour or so after that but there was literally no sign of life and my hands were frozen, so we called it a night.

The good thing about thermal spotters is they find stuff you might have missed with a lamp, but they can be depressing when they tell you there is absolutely F.A. about to shoot.

Nice work, I’ve only just started using thermal with one of the lads I take out and been able to spot things that I can’t see with the nv or the lamp certainly makes life a lot easier, even if it’s to far away to work out what it is, it’s something to work with if there’s nothing closer ?

Thermals a curse Dave... I recon it’s got to be like the bird thing with once black ya ain’t off back!

i couldn’t not have it now.. you see them out of range with a shotgun and easy targets in the wood that you can’t find with n/v or a lamp, keeps you interested though?

least you two had a successful night?

The first fox wouldn't have made a good pic. The second one was O.K. but it would have meant taking my gloves off. ?
