mackem 29,912
I like this story Man flies over Joburg on camping chair held up by 100 balloons. Johannesburg - It’s like a scene out of the movie UP! OK, it’s not a house – but Tom Morgan’s experiment was pretty impressive nonetheless. The adventurer ended up 2 000 metres in the air while sitting on a camping chair! Tom, who is originally from Bristol in England and runs a company called The Adventurists, recently went to Botswana with plans to set up the first-ever competitive helium balloon race in Africa. But the weather in Botswana just wasn’t very accommodating. “The problem was finding a good weather window and it was difficult to protect the balloons as they kept bursting,” he told the BBC. The 38-year-old then moved his crazy experiment to north Johannesburg, where the weather was welcoming enough for his flight. Tom spent two days filling his balloons with just enough helium to take him up into the air. On Monday 23 October he set off on his great adventure, tying his huge balloons to his camping chair – and he had lift off! He described his feelings as “somewhere between terrified and elated.” Eventually, he told the BBC, he realised his balloons were taking him to a layer in the atmosphere where the temperature drops. “I had to keep my cool and start gradually cutting the balloons," he said. After two hours in the sky, with nothing but his balloons and chair to keep him from catapulting to the ground, Tom gradually lowered himself back down by cutting off balloons one by one. His teammates were there to welcome him back to earth. Events Manager of The Adventurists Matthew Dickens told CBS news that they all couldn’t believe that he actually made it. "We weren't even sure Tom would come back alive. We didn't think he was going to manage it but yeah, he got there in the end. On The Adventurists website the thrill seekers wrote, “We live to find ways to make the world a bit more difficult. To bring chaos into our over-sanitised lives. “To create adventures where you don't know what will happen tomorrow or if you'll even make it to the end.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NZ0CeC6aH8

Blackbriar 8,569
I love stories like this..... If you have a spirit of adventure, a small heap of stupidity and a cavalier disregard for your own safety, look at the fun you can have !
