Bad Year For Ticks?

Recommended Posts

What's the best way to remove a tick if you get one on you?

You can buy tick picker type tools from pet shops for a couple of quid.

EDIT: They're worth a couple of quid of anyone's money and you can see by the design how they work without the instructions. My ACD rescue had to be sedated when we found him. He over a hundred ticks on him and 30+ burrowed in each ear. That's a trip to vets I don't want to do again...

If i pull a tick off myself or one of the kids do i need to treat the area with anything? Cream? Spray?

I've had a few and I find they're like flea bites. I take an antihistamine if I have a few, but I just put a blob of Neosporin on it (Like Savlon for non-yanks.) Rubbing alcohol isn't a bad idea.

I keep an eye on the bite site too, not only do we have to contend with Lyme disease but we also have, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Colorado Tick Fever, Tick Borne Relapsing Fever, and to a lesser degree Ehrlichiosis... :icon_eek:

There's plenty of info on Lyme disease and if you're prone to tick bites it could save you a lot of pain and suffering.

The tick key I use is made from aluminium and is the first one I haven't broken. The plastic ones don't seem to stand up to much if you've got a ton of shit on your keyrings! Quick look and you can buy them in the UK here. They're £6 but from buying plastic ones I wish I'd known about them sooner.

Haven't seen one on a dog in twenty year's.

then I must ask these two questions,1 do you have a dog and 2 have you ever took it out if the answer to one is yes ?

I've two dogs and there out every day.

then that is an amazing statistic I have three dogs and I,m finding ticks on them every time I take them out even for a quick walk round mown fields

I usually pick up a few ticks each year, and give them a spirit poultice (vodka or whisky as white spirit burns the skin) to make them drop off. I'll be using a tick remover from now on I've heard that chemicals can make them regurgitate their insides.

You must have a thin neck!

The whole family have got them on!

I've had them on my knackers in the past. Can you get a small (very small) collar to fit round--well you know where this is going.
