The one 8,585
if your wanting a gun above the legal power i would get a firearms cert and get it all done legit its handy having the extra power for some jobs and after this licencing has been in up here for a year or two they will bring it out all over Britain and then you have a case to say you need a air gun 1 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,589
Hi Dave. I have shot quite a few occasions along with Si Pittaway and Davy Thomas. Good lads who know their stuff! I think Si had done as much as anyone can to explore the fullest accuracy potential of an air rifle's worth as a hunting and sporting target rifle. In competition both lads are not an easy man to beat. I've done it, but, I can tell you honestly, not by an easy, long way-ahead score! Alright lads, let's have a few proper answers on the merits and setbacks of FAC air rifles. No, you cannot tell just from outward appearance, whether or not you average air rifle has been tuned above 12 ft lbs. Thoeben launched their FAC Rated 30-ft/lb+ Rapid series with longer barrels so that's a visual clue with certain purpose-built FAC versions of PCPs. But not with springers. There are only two distinct advantages with shooting a 23.6 ft/lb FAC spring rifle, from my near 20 years experience of owning and of shooting one.. One. You can get the pellet to hit a rabbits head faster and very lethally, over 30-40 yards than a sub-12 ft/lb rifle can. This gives a wary rabbit much less time to react and bolt out of the way of the pellet. It is also a brilliant air rifle to have if you have Mink to contend with on your permission. These are very twichy, fast-reactive and constantly moving animals and you need a powerful rifle that can deliver the shot decisively fast. Mink predating on fishstocks and other small inoffensive animals like voles on my permission's river banks, was the primary reason for me to get my FAC for my Weihrauch HW80 .22 and have it tuned professionally. Two. The pellet spends less time flying and is not so markedly affected by sidewinds and breezes. MYTH. "I had a 30 foot pound Weihrauch '80 that I could hit a rabbit dead at over 100 yards.! BOLLOCKS! You couldn't cock the barrel all day if you had it up at that power output. 20+ft/lbs is quite enough to get your arm aching during zeroing. AND... If you are are incapapable of hittting a rabbit's head of a target at 40 metres accurately with a sub-12 ft/lb springer. You are not going to suddenly develope world class precision with a rifle that has almost twice the level of recoil that a normal 12 ft/lb springer does. THE REAL POWER OF AN AIR RIFLE LIES SOLELY WITHIN ITS PRECISION ACCURACY. AND HOW GOOD A SHOT WITH IT YOU HONESTLY ARE. I cannot emphasise that truth enough. think I must have hit and killed more rabbits at 50 yards and over to 100 plus yards range with a sub-12 ft/lb HW77 .22 I have, than ever I did with my HW80. The only things that enable me to shoot to such accuracy is ... ONE. TOP QUALITY KIT. THE VERY BEST MONEY CAN BUY. SUPERBLY WELL LOOKED-AFTER AND CHERISHED. NO CHEAP SHIT OR CORNERS CUT. TWO. OVER 50 YEARS OF DEDICATED HARD PRACTICE ON RANGES TO ALL DISTANCES. BOTH .22 AND .177 AND NEVER ACCEPTING SECOND BEST OF MYSELF. THERE ARE NO SHORT-CUTS TO PRECISION ACCURATE SHOOTING. BUT IT'S NOT THAT DIFFICULT TO BECOME A PROFFICIENT MARKSMAN. There was a time when you could get an air rifle beefed up a bit for rabbiting and no one battered an eyelid. NOT ANY MORE. The penalties for carrying and possessing an over the limit air rifle are certainly serious. IS IT WORTH GETTING AN FAC FOR AN AIR RIFLE? Yes. But only if you think it's necessary for ther type of shooting you have to do. Otherwise, get a licence and a .22 LR! Quote Link to post
