Barrel Pond

Anyone got one. Thinking of getting a wine barrel in half and making a little pond for wildlife. Not planning on having any fish.. just some pond plants and hope to get some wildlife visiting with some steps for them to get in and out

way back i used to know a guy who grew water lillies, he had dozens of 1/2 barrels about the place with lillies in and there were always loads of activity around them from dragonflies and frogs etc ,

Yeah bgd just ordered one off ebay mate il get some pics up when it arrives. Got a solar water pump with it aswell.. nans pat geezer up road got a old horse water trough type things. Filled with newts and frogs.

Defo get some lilys mate and some hyciath spelling lol any airating water plants will go well. The water pump disrupting the water should fend off mosquito larve too

charlie used to bread white cloud mountain minnows in his ,they kept the mozzies down, lillies are not keen on water movement so he never had pumps in his , in hard frost he used to take the fish out and keep them in a tank in the garage just over a few winter months

you could link a few together with overflow pipe and use the pump through a few

Yeah was thinking of ordering a smaller one under it so to speak and have the waterfall effect. Cant beat sound of running water on a nice evening

Really want a pond but with kids about im settling for a barrel lol

Any one think it will be hard work keeping clear ? Or just make sure it gets alot of shade ?

Anything containing water brings wildlife into the garden as soon as you put it there, the strong plastic planting tubs are good filled with water and a mixture of plants

Yeah i did read that low plains can partially bury it in the ground as well so the wildlife has a "cool spot" in warms temps
