NEWKID 26,223
With the end of season fast approaching and thye wind howling we couldn't resist a trip out.Danny couldn't get over until 9-30 then we were heading the 10 minutes or so to a big lump of land a few miles from mine, this is steep farmland right up against some big forestry... it's a decent enough place to lamp. Before Danny turned up I took all the dogs for a blast around the fields, we jumped the fence into the top field and walked across it with the lamp on, Martha pushed up a rabbit and Fergie promptly caught it, cue sausage dog chasing Fergie around trying to steel the rabbit, a nice little start before I'd even got out..Danny turned up and we loaded up the truck, he had brought Roo along, she's a cracking bitch and it's nice to have her about..When we got to the top bits it was blowing a gale, the first field a couple of rabbits were sat out, Fergie had a short chase but missed it at the hedge. The next field goes alongside a bit of forestry, there were 2 nice Fallow does which we watched along the hedge line and back in... walking over the brow and Fergie pulled out of the slip, I flicked the lamp on and she was on a rabbit, a good tight run against a fence line finish with a nice pick up and halfway retrieve (struggling on the retrieve and the 7 weeks out hasnt helped, back to basics over the summer).we walked a couple more fields with and the dogs steadily picked up a rabbit or 2, Roo is running well and has a nice style I like her a lot.Up against the top woodland a big herd of fallow maybe a dozen or 15 moved along the tree line and away..We now headed down onto the lower fields and had a few more runs for each dog, the land isn't easy to lamp, big undulating fields, and it's normally long slip as they just don't tend to sit tight.Fergie had a nice run in decent size field and picked up cleanly on the straight run, she has a very good strike. Next field Roo ran a rabbit and went very wide boxing it from the hedge, the rabbit stopped and tried to run her the long way, there was only one winner and another in the bag.All in all an enjoyable night, Fergie needs a few nights just picking in the beam and ironing out an annoying habit where she comes all the way back once the lamp is off lovely, no messing at all but stops 5 yards short, it's minor but annoys me. I walk away and she comes then, it's easily sorted so no biggie just a little gripe. Ended the night on 8 up the farm plus the 1 before we went out...
