Arry 18,820
In the first week of March 2017 Australia will release RHDV1 K5. I wonder how long before some greedy farmer smuggles it into this country. Being colder and damper in this country the diseased will thrive I fear it will be all over for us. I think i'm right in saying that its not even species locked so they could be playing with fire. Bloody madness. Cheers Arry Edited February 16, 2017 by Arry 1 Quote Link to post

Aussie Whip 3,857
Same here in nsw in some areas, but numbers fluctuate year to year.Existing diseases seem to control numbers in most areas.Don't think new viruses are needed. If rabbits numbers are reduced too much the wildlife and farm stock are going to suffer from increased fox and feral cat predation. The farmers know this as have been asked to kill any foxes seen if given permission to hunt rabbits on their place. Those giant warrens are almost impossible to ferret in my experience even though they look promissing. Its not like it was 30 years ago,use to bring home 300 plus rabbits for a weekend.now lucky to get 20-30 in a weekend. This new virus sounds like another cane toad experiment. The one 8,401
Reading about it , it sounds really crazy it can survive on the ground for up to 8 months that's going to take out the rabbit population then if any other rabbit comes into a burrow etc to breed its going to kill them too there's going to be no chance of them repopulating Quote Link to post

The only good thing is it might make a few folk think about breeding there ferrets 1 Quote Link to post

Aussie Whip 3,857
Iv'e seen a whole hillside as a warren, hundreds of holes, you might bolt some, but you couldn't net and dogs are useless as rabbits just keep dropping back down the myriad of holes.Plus you'd be lucky to ever see the ferrets again.I wouldn't attempt it no matter how many ferrets, men, dogs.I just saw show saying the virus will kill 20%of rabbits(if you believe that). In a way with lower numbers they'll become more difficult to find and hunt, leaving only the keenest rabbiters bothering to hunt them. But I wouldn't under estimate the rabbit not to bounce back. , Same here in nsw in some areas, but numbers fluctuate year to year.Existing diseases seem to control numbers in most areas.Don't think new viruses are needed. Sirblessed 2,511
We will have to wait and see it is a hybrid variant virus that they are already immune to, so it will take them a few years to adjust. I don’t chase big numbers anymore, I’m quite happy plodding along getting my 50 a week for a bit of pocket money and pet food, I’m spoiled a bit with the ground I have to choose from, still do it 3-4 days a week for a few hours at a time weather permitting 1 Quote Link to post
