Vocal Marker

Any one got a dog that marks but gives a vocal indication. I don't mean going nuts at a hole yapping like an idiot. Just a little indication.

My old russell a long time ago when he marked new the importance of silence. But he new if I couldn't see him to give a little woof. If I called his name because he was in the middle of a bank of briars or some where marking he would give a muffled little woof. 9 times out of 10 that was enough to get me heading the right way. If I still couldn't find him then call again he would actually woof a little bit louder.

I never thought much about it back then. But the other day with the lurcher in a thick old wood he took off after a rabbit and could been marking 20 yards away and I wouldn't have found him and I just stood there pretty helpless not having a bloody clue even which direction to go. As luck would have it i put up another rabbit and yelled and he came running. But as I stood there like an idiot I dam near reverted back to the old times and shouted where are you boy but I suspect I would have got silence this time round lol

my beddy whippet will call if hes got one in thick cover but he does this to alert the other dogs he does not make noise when marking a set

Must be a jr thing then lol. It was a clever little talent knowing to be perfectly quiet at any other time. Ferreting day in and day out from the moment he could walk probably helped his learning

I lost my old border plenty of times when he used to stand and stare at a hole he was marking, sometimes not even very far from me but that red grizzle colour is hard to spot in cover.

yeh my border terrier,,,snorts ,,i call it trumpeting,,,she sticks her head in a hole,,,and its like shes sucking in all the scent from the hole,,,its not particulary loud,,but you know its a good mark when she does

The little bugger could find a bunny anywhere and would just freeze like that after creeping round the bury like a cat.

That's my old one mate, the younger ones is far too mad for ferreting.
