Wife's is a car version 1.6 xtr good on fuel ,trouble free in 2 years of motoring,

I had a 53 reg hdi at same time car version again, mine was slightly better on fuel but didn't have the acceleration and top end of the newer one,

The newer one also has wider body.

Berlingo 1.9 - Mine has done 260,000 no bother, still going...It has no window winders, doesn't lock, no speakers, but it has done 260,000 miles and never stopped...Took me everywhere hunting with the dogs, carried everything from deer to concrete blocks....It beat a snow plough in a heavy drift on the mountain, got out of the bog when a discovery was towed, I crashed it into a river and its still going....no breather, pipes hanging off everywhere, exhaust made from welding rods....Unbeatable!

Lol that sounds like the old hilux off top gear. Can't be killed. Haha.

 

What reg is that? Are the newer berlingos as good? 2010-2012 shape?

 

 

My one is 2002....Pretty old, The new ones I am unsure...My friend has a vegetable business and bought three 2002 models brand new which he drover into the ground, the last done 310,000 - He replaced them all with new 1.6 HDI models and had a lot of trouble with them, so much so he traded them back for used 1.9 straight diesels, two still running

 

A lot of people say the 1.6 HDI isn't as good as the 2.0 litre, but its hard to say unless you have owned and put a few miles on any vehicle I think.

 

I know for sure the 1.9 straight is a tank! I even followed a Ford Ranger over a ploughed field in mine no problem at all!

Over the years for work/dogs i've owned escort astra berlingo and caddy vans...the berlingo was by far the worst a real bag a shit...but going by the above post maybe i was just unlucky? was a 1.6 berlingo on a 04 plate... in the end it just wouldnt start in the cold...and when i was having to drive the old defender to work in the winter and i passed the old caddy i had sold years before with 180 000 on the clock still running...i bought myself another caddy... best of the lot imo

1.6 is nonsense!!

 

Or maybe you were just unlucky - Mine stopped starting in the cold and the mechanic trimmed the shims in the engine and it started since.

but also was pleasantly surprised by daihatsu hijet i had for some time, my mate still has it and for a small engine (1.3petrol) it can certainly carry its share of weight

all these little vans are the same underneath and badged up for different manufactures, I,ve just sold one badged as a Nissan, but it was a Renault kangoo, I like older motors myself, and think the people telling you to get the older 1.9 normally aspirated, non turbo, model with a manual fuel pump are the people you should be listening to, the hdi models will give you a few miles to the gallon more, but a shitload of pain when they go wrong, I,ve had them all, right back to a 205 diesel van that had the 1.9 straight diesel in, all my old 1.9,s have hit over 250.000 with little trouble were as the newer ones seem to struggle to get over a 100.000 without expensive repairs, I sold the Nissan/Renault with 98.000 on the clock after replacing the fuel pump, injectors and having to get the ecu re programmed, at great expense, I was glad to see the back of it and get back in my 96 smiley faced transit with 249.000 on the clock, slow noisey and a bit smokey but always starts and always gets to were it's going

I eventually killed my beloved berlingo,,,but did over 200,,,I'm looking now for another,,,mine was an 02 plate,,side loading door,,,1.9 ,,,,I think them old ones are better than hdi,,,,we had the 307 puegot car,,,and we fecked two turbos on that ,,,,

 

The places I got the van ,,folk would not think possible,,I remember the look on the keepers face when I parked on the moor,,lol

 

And don't spend all that money on a new one,,,,600 will get you somthing if you shop around....and loads of parts on the bay,,,,

Fat ferret have you had to replace the air filter housing,,,I've done mine a few times,,,that is one bad point about the belingo,,,or the old ones,,,the filter goes down to about in line with the sump,,next to the passenger front wheel,,,so on very uneven dirt tracks,,it's ripped the bottom of the housing off,,and the filter drops out,,and is run over by the back wheel,,,lol

 

After going to a scrappy twice and replacing it,,only 10 quid,,,the last time I did it I replaced the bottom of the housing with a flower pot,,,and gaffa tape,,,all the lugs that held the housing in place were missing so it was held in place the fencing wire,,,

Got a 2000 model 1.9 berlingo had it 3 years changed heater plugs once and oil 3 times lol .Does 500 miles round trips with the dogs every week in the season, good mpg never misses a beat. Sit at 70 all day Lincoln registration LOL and no one knows whats in it unlike cars 4x4 and estates

Mine had window tint already fitted,was bonus as meant you couldn't see inside but could do tip runs as commercial vehicles need permission to go in now.

It fell off so many times I stopped putting it back on, hasnt had one for years! Theres a pipe or two off in round that area too but she keeps running!

 

Great you got yours onto the Moor! I would well believe it, I have got mine into some places and scrapes!
