A Good Fighter In Decline

Recommended Posts

Remember watching a few of Laing's later fights on TV in the late 80's/early 90's. His low hands stance and those splayed feet made him interesting to watch, although I guess I never seen near the best of him by then.

And I don't know whether to believe GGG would be at the Hammers. Surely he'd support a big club.., like Man U, Arsenal..or Sunderland?

There was a bit on ssp news about ggg being a big west ham fan.

Do you get and see Kirkland at all Gnasher?

I saw him last year for the first time in about 25 years but we was never pals so i doubt i,ll see him in the next 25 either....his son still lives in Hackney and has only seen him a handful of times himself.

It was only Golovkin remember.......i would imagine only big name fighters support big clubs like Sunderland ;)

One fight i remember well was when laing must have been in his mid 30s and fought george collins who had a 30 odd win record and 1 loss ex amateur golden boy a fighter bigged up by the press etc. Laing beat him with ease stopping him in the 5th round and i dont think collins fought again.

How did a 35 year old bloke who was a poor trainer, partied too much and smoked weed all the time, keep in that shape and have reflexes so sharp that he could fight and beat a 22 year old prospect with his hands held that low?

And was as flat footed as a duck !....natural ability i guess.

The reason he was so flat footed was because he did not walk until he was 5. He was born splay footed. His feet pointed out the wrong way. He reckoned he couldn't balance properly with his hands held high, maybe that was something to do with his feet as well.

If only he had the temperament to go with his skills. Difficult to smoke and train.

Mixed feelings about Kirkland talented yes , but f****d it all away not just in the weed but a very bad crack addict . I was also told by a local in Hackney that if the boys in blue caught him while he was clucking he'd grass everyone !

Splayed feet is probably the correct terminology.....Kirkland didnt do things by halves though he would tell people that one foot pointed east the other pointed west :D

Kirkland one of my fav Boxers of all time .

Pure Class.

Dave Boy Green another' pure heart .

Cazaghe another - great hand speed .

Thing is we all see things different and like what we like in a fighter.

I thought Davey Boy Green's heart and stopped after that deadly combination by Sugar Ray Leonard...
