Chid 6,377
going to be pedantic. Constant 4 wheel drive ?? They only work on two corners don't they? No ...
jok 3,037
Strange that. My brother jacked up two corners (opposites) and asked me to drive off. Can't be done. So all wheel drive on a disco ain't occurring.

So all wheel drive on a disco ain't occurring. No car drives all wheels at once unless they have lockable diffs ... jack 1 wheel up on a disco and without the centre diff locked youll go no where
jok 3,037
Think that was where I was going with this. Constant 4 wheel drive was really the question. I think I'm right in saying that the only constant 4 wheel drive road going vehicle is the Mercedes GWagon. But hey, this is only a discussion.

jok 3,037
Doesn't that say everything? The only vehicle that can actually have constant 4 wheel drive??
Chid 6,377
Doesn't that say everything? The only vehicle that can actually have constant 4 wheel drive?? constant 4 wheel drive means 4wd engaged all the time .. g wagons are 2 wheel drive till you engage 4wd , they drive the wheels like a disco would until you start engaging diff locks ... jok 3,037
However. Discos only drive corner to corner whilst gwagon will have all 4 wheels engaged.
Chid 6,377
However. Discos only drive corner to corner whilst gwagon will have all 4 wheels engaged. Discos dont only drive corner to corner , power goes to every wheel , the differential dictates how much power goes to each wheel .. G wagons will only have equal power going to all wheels if you engage the axle diff locks , you dont drive about with equal power at every wheel all the time.. btw you can get axle diff locks on discos to ... jok 3,037
Ok. The diff dictates power to each wheel, so, in difficulty, which discos invariably are, the power is sent to the generating wheel or wheels which is corner to corner. G wagons power goes to all wheels irrespective of disruption at any corner. Hence equal power at all times. Hence the only true 4 wheel available. Only a conversation mind you. jok 3,037
Chid21. Let's go back to your original answer. NO. What did you mean, exactly?
Chid 6,377
Chid21. Let's go back to your original answer. NO. What did you mean, exactly? Without a limited slip or lockable centre diff and without limited slip or lockable front and rear diffs , jack one wheel up and power will go to that wheel ... So will only work on 1 corner
Qbgrey 3,989
No car is constant 4wd.unlesd locking diff I always believed, they won't turn or go round corners if all 4 are pulling equally.

But hey, this is only a discussion.wrong, disco is always 4 wheel drive aslong as all 4 wheels are on the deck and have traction disco 2s have 4wd even when a wheel or 2 are off the ground due to traction control. jok 3,037
Think I'm missing it here. A G wagon has constant 4 wheel drive by virtue of the the fact that the diffs work together making each revolve at the same rpm. All wheels at all times are driving. Any other vehicle requires manual override from 2 to 4 wheel drive. Am I wrong? Also. A comment made about 4 wheel not being able to corner is a bit of fluff. We know that you can wind front and rear axles at a different rpm but to be honest it would take a lot of miles.
