scottish lurcher 185
I currently have a shed approx 10ft x 12ft I make furniture as a hobby . I have been thinking of putting in a small wood burning stove to keep the place warm ,while I work on the cold nites and days . Anybody know the size of stove I would require , also how easy it would be and what would be needed . My worry is the heater won't be in middle of shed ,so it might set shed wall on fire . gnipper 6,879
My mate has a home made rocket stove in his workshop which is probably double the size of your shed and it's roasting in there. I think if you are worried about the wall you can heat proof behind the stove.

shepp 2,285
I would say the smallest one you can buy, or no bigger than 5 kW. Edited October 31, 2015 by shepp
scottish lurcher 185
Well the reason I thought about small wood burner is I could burn all the scraps of wood ,rather than taking them to tip . There is small ones on flee bay . Edited October 31, 2015 by scottish lurcher
fireman 11,463
A burner made out of a 13kg gas bottle will be well enough for a space like that and make sure you put a decent surround behind it against the shed wall it'll be fine,i've used burners of this size in caravans many times without problems, but go for a square type based on a yotal or any scandinavian designs and you won't go far wrong as they do know how to keep warm ..

I was going to sit on a paving slab but was unsure if it would need to be a air gap between metal surround and shed wall .

I've allways have had a gap mate with a matal sheet but you could tile it seeing as it's permantly sited in one place,a paving slab is perfect for underneath it. shepp 2,285
I would put asbestos substitute board on the walls close to the burner.
scottish lurcher 185
How much air gap would you recomend mate ? Also Iam unsure best type of material for flue pipe, should I use soild pipe or that flex pipe ?
shepp 2,285
If it's lined I would say you could go as close as 8 inches. You will need solid flue and a suitable collar to exit the shed and a cowl on top, maybe check eBay for second hand flue and fittings.
shepp 2,285
Maybe something like this could be a good refurb job, it is easy to buy spares. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=191725287936&globalID=EBAY-GB Edited October 31, 2015 by shepp
greg64 3,063
i would go for a small pot belly stove 3kw max for that size workshop there great for burning small off cuts
shepp 2,285
Keep in mind a small one with a good fire in it works much better than a bigger one with a small fire in it. They need to get up to a decent temperature to run efficiently, you will often find yourself leaving the shed door open Also make sure you get a CO2 alarm.
