Rather Rusty

Me, not the gun.

8 weeks of graft and flying to the states and back (where I had something of a plink with a few handguns off a copper mate and a nice 300 winmag hunting rifle shooting 185gr) I have had calls from both my work perms saying, "can you pop back in". One of the perms is a very tight time slot due to it being a working factory, so I headed off to the other perm last night after dropping a line to the awld lad.

I was up at the perm with no sign of Mac, so had a look in the back field. A good 15-20 young rabbits were around but legged it before I could get near (it was still light), I didn't want to lay up as these were just kits and I was waiting on Mac to arrive. I went back to the car and was putting the NV on when Mac turns up a little later than planned, but he was up and ready in no time.

We went off to the first field and on scanning I spotted 12-13 rabbits down the right and at the far side, Mac went after those so I went up the left side to the horse field. When I got there a nice rabbit was sat munching, so I took a standing supported shot with 1 mil dot and he just rolled over....nice, first shot in 8 weeks and it was a canny 46 yarder. Bagged. I walked the next 2 fields and again saw 10-15 in each field, all ran before I could get close and again, I didn't fancy laying up as I needed to be on site in 1 hour or so. The farmer had cut the crop and planted what looks like winter cabbage or similar, he had also cut the 3rd field which has been long grass for the last 2 years. Again here, lots of bunnies but many to the far side where there is a busy main road with no cover. I decided that was best shot later at night.

As I wandered back across the 3 fields, I saw Mac's red lamp so made sure I walked away from him. On getting back to the car I had a quick look in the back field and this time saw 5-6 good size rabbits closer to the gate. They were too close to risk climbing the gate, so I took another standing supported shot, this time I figured 45 yards so gave it around 1 dot. The rabbit flipped, ran 5 steps then rolled onto its back and kicked 3 times. On pacing it out, it was further than I thought, 56 yrds, the pellet had dropped a little lower than aimed and hit bang in the heart. The chest cavity was just flooded when I skinned it.

Back at the car Mac turns up with 3 nice rabbits so I'm already in trouble. We drove over to the other perm site and had one walk round the perimeter, Mac one side, me the other. He kindly shone his red lamp on my said to warn the rabbits that I was coming, so I saw very little. Down one very dark part I had 2 rabbits almost run over my boots, though I hadn't seen them. I met Mac at the far side and neither had been able to get any shots off, so we moved onto the work perm.

After signing in at security we chose an area each and went about our business. On my lawn I had seen again easy double figures of all sizes, but with the big moon and security lighting, they were gone before I could shoot. I took up a position about 50 yards from the fence and waited. A good 30 mins later the first rabbits started to come out about 50-60 yards away, as I waited, I had 2 rabbits dropped almost on my head. With Mac saying "these yours? - nah, didn't think so". Mac went off again and I sat in wait, AGAIN. The mist was moving in and it was getting cold. After a good 30 - 40 mins the rabbits came back out. 4 to my left at around 50 yards, 1 in front at 40. I decided to take the one in front and give it a mil dot, and watched the pellet go over its head...I quickly looked left and the others had not reacted. I reduced the hold over to 1/2 a dot and quickly dispatched 2 fatties. The others ran.

I went back to Mac and he had just the two from before. So we were sat at 9 (5-4 to Mac) when he says "we need to get one more, so you can even the sco......hold on, one there, hold me lamp....pop, got him"....

I'm pretty sure he was going to say I should get the 5th to even up, but before I had even seen it, Mac bagged his 6th.

Quick clean up and sorted the rabbits for the butcher, £25 in profit and a decent night out. Need to sort a date for the other site now.

Mac, stick a couple of pics up mate?

Stick with that 100 Mac, - that`s nice shooting lads.

Just think Mac, if you were to shoot a "proper man`s calibre, .177" with a HW 100 kt, your bags would increase greatly, eh !
