Why Do We Work The Terriers?

its too hard to put into words, but theres more than a connection between dogs and us, its something greater, for nigh on 33,000 yrs we have been in each others lives, working together to help each other advance and deal with problems created by nature and ourselves. the wild dogs have a life of only the strongest survives and around 3 to 10 yrs but domestic dogs live up to double that. companions, workers, guards, etc. no other animal comes close. some may say dumb wolves for feeding off our scraps but id say the early dogs knew as much as us that bit was a match made in heaven. divine intervention perhaps?? who knows? but its too hard to put into words

I often wonder if we would of got to where we have as a species without that early cooperation with dogs...

 

exactly, for once we discovered selective breeding/manipulation of dogs evolution, we turned them into hunters for us, to feed our families where we may have died of starvation, it gave us a heads up on predators hunting us, that's the guarding/protection, in return we gave them food and a place to live and safety and a place to rear theyre young, free from predation. maybe dogs and early modern humans realised that the odds of survival was stacked in our favour working as a team.

I'm at the cross roads just now asking myself that, old bitch retired my jack dog needed laid of for a good while with his nose an same happened last year so back off, I got a really well bred if a mates old old stuff showing great signs jus turned 15 months an four months ago she started losing energy couldn't breathe after any exercise six trips to the vet later he still couldn't find why but she was getting worse in the end pts so I'm siting with a pretty much retired dog now only five that I can only use to flush without his nose popping like a grape, ave sat many a day now asking after all the miles and hours I put in is it worth it really. Gunnae run the lurcher pup this year an hope I make the right decision for next season

For me it all comes down to admiration. Admiration for a dog willing to push its own limits and give it's all for no other reason than sheer will. Admiration for the ancestors of the dogs I'm working and my own ancestors who may have worked similar dogs long ago. Admiration for my quarry, and to be able to learn their secrets and habits that very few humans ever get to see. And finally admiration for nature, all the lessons she has to teach and all her glory.

 

I can't usually describe very well why I love the working dogs so much, I just don't know of ANYTHING so pure and wholesome.

I believe like dogs that people come in the the same groups,we all know dogs come in hunters,catchers,fighters,mouthy alarms and the usual dominant,submissive types and we all know people who have these same qualities .A few thousands of years of us being "civalized" hasn't really stratched the surface of what nature thinks we need in the real world and like with dogs we still come in our selective groups and that's why some of us can't help but hunt as it's in our natural genetic make up for survival of our race..

Which terrier has had the better, more fulfilled life, the one that sadly dies age 4 facing it's quarry after years of doing what it loves or the one that dies age 15 after a life of eating dog biscuits and being dragged round a park on lead a few times a week?
