DogFox123 1,379
Couple of mins into that vid the man says, the universe is so big, we might never find the edge, so he's admitting its not infinite it has an edge, lol Carry on to the end...
kanny 21,546
So IF the universe did start from a singularity and expanded at the speed of light and we knew the universe was 14ish billion years old then would that make the universe 28 billion light years across.? That's big but not infinite if that's the case.

I don't think there's much new about this theory though in fact it's something I use to think as a kid trying to make sense of it all. . The singularity thing has always been a bit messy even to my limited knowledge if space and time are interlinked as Einstein predicted then there was no time before the start of spacetime how do you really get your head around that ? Infinity of coarse!...It certainly tidies things up but to me it feels like a bit of a cop out. Edited July 30, 2015 by kanny
Tiercel 6,986
Forgive my childish reasoning, but if something is constantly expanding then is it not infinite? Does it not only become finite when it stops expanding? TC

They've come to the conclusion that's due to dark energy....

Born Hunter 17,907
Forgive my childish reasoning, but if something is constantly expanding then is it not infinite? Does it not only become finite when it stops expanding? TC While blowing up a balloon, is it constantly expanding? Yes, of course. Yet it also has a finite volume at any point during that expansion doesn't it. At no point does it have infinite volume, or will it ever do.

Lol We can't see gravity but we know it's there, how can you explain the Universe accelerating as it expands? I can't im a cabinet maker not a theoretical quantum physicist lol that said they can't explain it either. There's no proof of dark energy or matter it's just something that makes the maths work... gravity on the other hand is quiet easy to demonstrate at least ....although how it quite works is another matter. DogFox123 1,379
Who knows?? Maybe Dark Energy and Dark Matter the two unknown competing forces in space are Heaven and Hell??

You know as well as I do that there is a perfectly good mathematical reasoning to say it is. But if not infinite (which I subscribe to as mind f***ing as it is) the what's on the outside? (No it ain't god Francie)
mushroom 13,942
π is infinite so far
