roundmouth86 251
Hi guys I'm after a .17 HMR and wondered what people's opinions were on each of the models and wondered if there's any up for grabs, Thanks in advance Roundy Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Hi Roundy I had a CZ452 hmr and was an awesome rifle, Imo very hard to beat. I only sold it as I needed a dedicated foxing rifle and have a .22lr for rabbits. But a great long range rabbit round and close fox round. Just beware of wind drift and as it is notoriously bad oh and dangerously dodgy ammo. Regards Dan Edited June 21, 2015 by shropshire dan Quote Link to post
jacknife 2,005
I've got the 16" CZ455 Varmint Thumbhole stock Dont think you can go wrong with a CZ rifle the rimfires are probably the most common out there Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
For day to day field work, nobody NEEDS anything more than a CZ. 3 Quote Link to post

andy s410c 62
You'll be spoilt for choice if you buy 2nd hand. There's normally a fair few for sale once they've been owned for a couple of month I had the CZ American great gun but as said a thousand times over it's the wind drift, bad ammo batches & IMO just a bit underwhelming once you get it out in real shooting conditions ie a wind over 3mph or a gnat farts next to it Quote Link to post

I never quite follow this wind drift malarkey, yes they move, but nowhere near as much as .22lr generally, so why does HMR get all the bad press about wind drift when .22lr is worse? Compare a few for yourself here... http://www.federalpremium.com/products/rimfire.aspx 3 Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Probably cus people tend to push the hmr much further than the .22 thus making the drift far greater at distances the hmr comes into its own Quote Link to post
goldfinger 135
I have a cz 452 varmint very accurate long distance rabbit round and I tend to use it for that purpose only,I generally use my .22lr for rabbit control. Quote Link to post
darrendigger 19
Cz 452 great little rifle and very very accurate !! Atb dd Quote Link to post

I've never knocked the HMR for the calibre that it is, just that I found it very susceptible to movement even in mild to moderate winds. It was the second rifle that I ever owned, and I thought that I was the Kiddie when I brought it home. A "real" rifle I thought, and the next step up from my trusty .22LR. . I tried to get on with it, I really did, honest. . Sadly though it was not to be. The areas that I have permission over are predominantly mountainous and invariably it is always windy. What a disaster! Depending on your hunting environment, the wind might be a very small factor in the grand scheme of things, and in these situations I believe that the HMR could be a lethal tool (if you can avoid the inconsistent ammo). Like I said in a previous thread ....... the HMR is just like Marmite. Subjectivity. 1 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
SD So just why is that a problem with the HMR, exactly the same can be said of the .22lr. As a big generalisation the wind drift on the .22lr at 65 yards is the same as a HMR at 100 yards. You can't blame the calibre for a shooter pushing their luck. In simple terms the .22lr is a -100 yard max tool in my book, the HMR is 140-160 yard max tool, at those distances both have a very similar wind drift. If you use a .22lr at 60 yards and a HMR at 180 yards the HMR will obviously be worse. I hear the HMR being slagged off for being susceptible to the wind all the time, I honestly can't remember hearing anyone say the .22lr is badly effected by the wind, when it is most definitely worse every time, at the same distances, compared to the HMR. What I am trying rather laboriously to say is, there is no difference in either if used within their sensible operating range, but at the same distance the HMR will always be better. andyf 144
I had a CZ American Left Hand 16" carbine, great rifle (because all CZ rimfires are good). I wasn't too bothered with wind drift, but I had ammo problems i.e. no main powder charge just the primer pushing the bullet 3" up the barrel, easy to get out with a cleaning rod but you just don't need it! The ammo is also expensive when compared to .22 lr. 17 HMR, well like I say I 'had' one, I suspect you may well be a previous owner after a while, but at least there's plenty of used ones around, I guess you need to try one.
