OldTrapCollector 377
Depends how's it's set. Could have been in a tunnel for stoats and rabbit went in But wouldn't that contravene the Approval Order ... ie catching a species not approved by the legislation ... ? Quote Link to post
Rimfireboy! 1,463
Depends how's it's set. Could have been in a tunnel for stoats and rabbit went in It was, and that's what happened. I don't set traps for rabbits, this one got unlucky. Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
I get that accidents can and do happen, but how can you effectively stop a hedgehog, polecat, rabbit or mink going into a trap designed to catch something else? How can the Approval Orders be so prescriptive in some areas and so vague in others? Quote Link to post

I don't know how the rabbit got into the tunnel as the holes each end of the box are less than 3 inches but when I found it the box was tipped up and the rabbit had been dragged away from where the trap was set. J Darcy 5,871
To be honest, from what I've seen the MK4 is a bit inhumane......I'm sure there'll be another trap being invented that will take over from it.... Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
All the Fenn Mk 4 needs is a stronger spring - simple 1 Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,739
The problem with catching rabbits in traps that are not designed to kill em quick,.is that they hollar ... This scream, is the perfect draw for any predator or even a domestic critter,.so a rabbit is best killed wham bam.. Rabbits will often squeeze into trap tunnels,...it happens on many estates,.(especially on Wild Bird shoots) where vermin control is paramount. I've seen plenty ,.still alive .... Facts are shit happens.... 4 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Young rabbits are caught for a past time in the spring if the tunnel is near a bury . 3 Quote Link to post
iwm 71
The time has come to document every thing you do even if the pest control you do is unpaid. If you work in pest control for a living its just part of your daily routine, but if its just for sport you might need to think about a diary or some kind of report. If you are using mk4s for rats and catch a rabbit and you have recorded you actions and how /where your trap is set and your target, you should be ok?. I know it will be a pain in the ass!! but its the way it is now, too many people with cameras who think they know more than anyone. You are not the first to catch something you did not set the trap for. If you are working a farm or land just for sport/unpaid and you give the farmer or land owner a report of your days work it shows you are looking after your permission. It also lets you tell them of any damage to walls, fencing etc you see while out and about, You could send an email when you return home, it only takes a few lines but gives you a little more respect the next time you are on that land. iwm ps i often take pictures of traps set just for proof of how and where set. looks good on reports. 2 Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
As long as precautions were taken to exclude non-targets and the catch was accidental then no law was broken IMO. 4 Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
As well as a report, I like to keep photos , showing how traps/ bait stations were left, their position, entrances narrowed if required, secured in place.etc All helps if ever a problem arises, can prove you did everything within the law atb 1 Quote Link to post
