Daz39 962
Not been out for about a month with work and travel so was desperate to grab the first chance this week. Looked at the forecast last night and it looked like last night was the only clear night this week, so off I popped. I dropped Mac a bell asking if he wanted to come out, but he had too much graft on so it was solo hunting last night. Mac and I had been focusing on one half of my perm recently so last night I thought I'd check out the other half, which hasn't been shot for 2-3 months. In the back field I scanned with the viper and spotted 2 groups of 4-5 rabbits. I went off towards the closest, but they spooked when I was still + yards away. I turned my attention to the second group and managed to get to what I thought was about 40 yrds (a "NV" 40 yrds which could have been anything from 30-60 yrds!). I lined up on a rabbit, took a shot and down it went. Just a youngster, teenage rabbit out when he shouldn't have been! I didn't bother hanging around as I had a fair bit of land to cover, and so moved to the 3 central fields. Again scanning with the Viper I saw 4 rabbits in the middle of the field. I followed the tractor tracks and stalked to within 30-40 yrds of a pair. the other 2 had run off. I went prone, lined up on the bigger rabbit and let fly. Watching the tv screen the pellet did such a loop and hit the rabbit way lower than aimed, it just crumpled and lay there with eyes open not moving. I re-loaded, assuming I had missed and it just hunkerd down, took aim and let fly exactly in the kill zone. On skinning this rabbit I had put the pellet through both front legs. I can only assume that it was a bent skirt on the pellet. There was no wind last night and the second shot was centre cross hair perfect. Thankfully it took a second to reload but still disturbing what a flyer can do. Moving over from the left centre field to the middle one I noticed a big rabbit just sat low in some street light, so I could make the distance out well, I took a very easy 35 yrd head shot for 3 in the bag. In the central field there were 8-9 rabbits sat in the middle of the field, flood lit from the street lamps. They spotted me break the hedge and ran so I went and lay up 45 yards out from the hedge looking at the different runs. Within 20 mins a rabbit came back out and quickly wished it hadn't. 4 down, 3 big fatties. I looked in the right field and again saw 6-7 rabbits run when I broke cover. I decided not to chase them and to go look on the top field. I have to drive round to this and getting out of the car, a quick scan showed 15+ rabbits in the first part of the field. I stalked 3-4 but they were little and when the adults noticed me, they all ran. I went and lay up in my fave spot (where I dropped 5 in 1 min last time out) and sure enough within 30 mins they came back out and I managed to bag 2. One heavily pregnant doe and one mid size adolescent. I scanned the far side of the field and saw a good 15-20 sets of eyes looking back at me, all 100+ yrds off. It was 2am and about 1 degree so I called it a night. This perm was decimated by mixy last year and I have tried to limit shooting to once every couple of weeks and it looks like the rabbits are back and in nice numbers. Some good sport to be had here. Looking forward to warmer nights and bigger bags! But 4 decent sized rabbits to the butcher, and 2 little ones which are going to my dog. Missed a good night Mac, let me know when your work settles down. 3 Quote Link to post

Daz39 962
Cheers gents. I'm well Skot thanks. Mad how the crap weather and work keep you stuck inside. Mac. Plenty around mate, you might even have got one yourself! Flighty as hell mind, even with the NV. VM it was indeed. Perfect night, clear cool and crisp. No wind. I was out from 8-2 and it only felt like a couple of hours. Got nippy by 2am mind. Quote Link to post
