Those people who approach you on the street clipboard in hand looking to get you to sign-up to a monthly donation scheme have a modern word to describe them.....Chuggers......charity muggers.

Along a similar vein, I visited Pets At Home the other day to purchase a large ceramic dog bowl and inside was a sticker saying that for each one sold a donation would be made to the RSPCA. I must assume that in with the cost of the bowl is the cost of covering the donation. I asked if they had any others which did not have a donation attached and they said no, so I declined to buy one from them.

Also, as a VIP member you get to opt for an automatic donation to an animal charity, I opted for dogs trust, but amongst the candidates were the RSPCA.

Something similar happened to me gnash, a certain charity collector stopped and explained what it was all about, I had a couple extra quid on me at the time and asked him to take it - he refused saying I could only sign up for 12 months paying X amount every month needing bank details etc. Thing was, the money I was going to give him worked out to around 5-6 months worth of small payments.. So now I'd rather just give to the likes of my sisters special needs training center and such like at least it's appreciated and actually goes there, and they don't even ask for it!

Disappointed me - I thought I was doing a good turn.

Thats it Mo best keeping it local.....in our case it was a little charity football match so wasnt a small amount of money so they have to send you paperwork of how the money breaks down etc....after questioning it i remember a bird on the phone saying " well we cant take it then ".....i said so you are willing to deprive needy English children..... her response was " no you are " :icon_eek: ........after that like you did we found a cracking little local charity and everything turned out great but just go,s to show the lengths they,ll go to force you to accept the worlds problems !

I believe they need some sort of a license to take cash donations, so the charity fundraisers you see on the streets and at your door are not legally able to take cash.

The charities try to operate with some sort of long term planning, which is why they prefer regular direct debits as opposed to cash donations. Statistically a donor will donate for an average of something like 9 months, this gives the charity better financial stability.

Most charities are no different to any other profitable business, they want the most effective means to achieve their goals. If that means direct debits over cash donations and chief exec's on 6 figure salaries then so be it. The means are justified by the ends.

oh my god imagine the woman saying 'no you are' :icon_eek: that's ridiculous! You were good enough even considering it which most wouldn't have in the first place!
