Tyla 3,179
Actually you can shoot them, they can be a real pain if you get lots on a duckpond coz they drown the ducklings. No sport though and no point unless they're causing a genuine problem. Quote Link to post
Guest little_lloyd
We dont touch them on our lake I think there bleddy lurvely And it is legal to shoot thm but i cant see why you would want to if they are of no harm Quote Link to post

Geoff.C 0
Coots can be aggressive little sods if living close to other types of fowl. No need to shoot 'em though,or moorhens. As they only chug about the water very slowly,it would be a poor sportsman who felt any sense of achievement hitting one! Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
there better taken with a bird of prey Quote Link to post
danny boi 0
thanks for the reply's fellas all it is is that ive got permission on a local golf course to do rabbits squirrels and pest bird species and i just noticed that there are an absolute shed load of moorhens and theyre sh*itting all over the greens and rest of the course and just wounderd if it would be worth asking the people there if they wanted me to thin out the population. cheers dan Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
I sometimes have to cull a few on my local fishing pond. These birds are found in high densities and persistantly eat anglers bait and even get caught on rod and line. They bully other birds. Its coots that cause the most damage but moorhens are ok. When examined closely they are a very nice bird indeed... Quote Link to post

I can understand it if there's a fair old few knocking about But on our lake you only see one or two at a time so i dont feel he need to controll them But on the stream down the bottom theres a few and i sometimes let the dogs have a bit of fun chasing them up and down the streams!!! OldTrapCollector 377
We used to have an annual 'coot shoot' to thin them out, they used to eat the feed put out for the ducks and geese. There's not much to eat on them though, just a tiny bit of breast meat on each side. Skin one and you'll see - they are not exactly meaty things. OTC Quote Link to post

I know my ferrets won't eat them! Quote Link to post
