Presentations - Tips

Recommended Posts

Anyone got any? I've turned up to somewhere planning on doing a presentation to about 30 people (out of my depth) only to find there is about 60 people here and now I'm bricking it. I can't refuse to do it as it's a part of my human resources certificate and it is required?? Any advice?

Practice practice practice. In front if the mirror, in front of a video camera, in front of friends and family and anyone else who will let you talk at them.

as said practice, i never talked in front of anyone until last year, then started school and had a best man and groom's speech all within a few months of each other. 1st one was rough around the edges (and scared the feck outa me), but by the time i done the last two, i was very confident in myself. the more you do them the better for you.

just dont panic, you wont actually die lol

Tips;

Don't fidget,

Look people in the eye,

Good posture with soft but purposeful gestures (not waving your hands around like a disabled Tony Blair),

A very good tip is to network with your audience prior to the talk ;)

Use PowerPoint but don't overdo it, some people use too many slides which leaves the audience numb "death by PowerPoint"

15 slides should be adequate for 30 mins. Perhaps use a short video as part of your presentation this engages people.

When setting out a presentation structure it just like the news on TV eg

Say what you are going to tell them

Tell them what you want them to know

Then summarise what you have told them.

Most importantly as already said practice practice practice. Don't worry about being nervous this is the most natural feeling to have, no one in the audience wants you to fail just keep your voice calm and speak slowly, don't rush it.

Good luck
