Best Type Of Dog ?

Recommended Posts

I have a whippet/Bedlington. Perfect for me, picks up runners, holds rabbits in the nets and marks.I mainly work hedgerows so a collie type cross would be too big in my opinion to get into the tight spots my whippet/beddy does. I don't think mine is head strong at all its how you bring them up and if you master recall and walking to heel at a young age then your fine. I'm not saying that collie types are not good at all its just my opinion and what hunter 1 says horses for courses.

I think any type of lurcher will ferret well if entered correctly, the smaller type are preferred due to rabbits running into tight spaces and the dog needs to be quick of the mark.

I have a saluki whippet bull greyhound and he excells at ferreting he is only 24" tts. Marks well, and catches runners

I'm thinking of getting a dog for next season, but not sure what to get any advice or opinions would be grate, something that's a good all round ferreting dog

Hi James,...good to hear that you fancy getting a dog to assist you with the ferreting...

Going rabbiting without a keen dog in tow,.. can be a boring old game..

Most lurchers will serve you well,.if given the chance...but,..its sensible to keep things simple,...so take your time and choose wisely

All the best, Phil.

I had that choice to make early this year and I went for a lurcher to lurcher who is going to make 24-25 inch. Can't fault him really for temperament and hunting instinct but I do feel a bit over gunned as I just wanted a marking dog really so in hind site a little bushing terrier cross would have been more suitable maybe. But I wouldn't change him now I have him

Hi Phil,

Thank you for the advice, im torn between a collie/whippet and a beddy/whippet, I don't need a big dog for the ferreting I do.

But like you have said I will take my time cause the dog I get is going to be with me for years to come, on all my outing I'll keep you updated on what I'm licking at or getting

all the best mate
