Rabbit Proof Fencing [Not]

Recommended Posts

just wondering if anyone has come across this before

i have spotted rabbits getting through holes at the bottom of rabbit proof fencing which appear to have been created by themselves by biting through the chicken type wire.

is this possible ?

if so its hardly rabbit proof

.or have the housing developers used substandard mesh as i,ve never seen this type being breached so quickly after it has been errected.

the rabbits live in some waste ground and the fencing was put in to protect the new lawns and green area,s in a new housing developement but when i,m out for a walk with the dogs there are rabbits on the bits there not supposed to get access to and they just run back to the waste land where their burrows are located via the holes in the fencing.

definatley a case of the grass being greener on the other side ;)

thanks for the quick replies.

i was just amazed at how quickly they have made their way through it.

its only been up for a very short period of time

i don,t see the housing developers carrying out any form of regular maintenance , but a drop box sounds a good idea

thanks

The other problem is that the cheap wire made in the far east is no-where near as strong as the high quality british stuff.

The way things are these days, folks will work for peanuts and cut corners with materials.

I was doing a job rabbit fenced inside a paddock and the guy said next time you come can you bring snares and traps the rabbits where biting threw the wire and digging under it , and it was just erected two days before

this is probably a good explanation.

the job looked good when first completed but to be honest they probably shouldn,t have bothered.

i have seen similar fence jobs done a few years back and the only way the rabbits could get through was to bury very deep under the wire

still i suppose the situation could be exploited in some way

Folk don't realise how high rabbits can jump,,,I have watched them go over proper rabbit fences that are a good 3 foot high and then two strands of fencing wire on top of that,,,,the hight of wich will be getting on for nearly 3.5 foot or more,,,,

Regular looked at jobs and the owner has said,,I don't know how there getting in,,,,I've replyed I do,,,they have gone over,,,they then look at you like your an idiot,,,,,but sit there with the rifle for an hour,,,,,and it's clear I was right,,,,but then I always am,,,;)

A lad that used to be on here by the handle of Peg & Gun had some great footage on video of what rabbits can do, he was setting fence wires 3 feet off the ground on one stretch

For 17 years I worked for the no1 fencing company in the UK making all types of agricultural fencing. Years ago the rabbit mesh order was sent to china, cost reasons, and made over there. When it came over here it got its labels, with big union jack on it, with small "packaged in the UK" written underneath. You need 18g wire with category "a" galvanizing preferably galvanized before knitting into mesh for it to last any length of time. Where it is made makes no difference whatsoever.
