Disaster Averted

After a long week at work I try to cram as much as I can into my weekends so decided to have a go on the lamp tonight. Got all the kit ready and checked the torches and spare batteries and all was in order. Set off in the truck at 8:30pm and was parked up off the road and out of sight fifteen minutes later.

I take three ultrafire torches on my trips out. The first is a modded red led (convex lens and blacked out reflector to give a tight bright beam) with pressure switch that attaches to the gun, the second is another red led but lower power that is used for scanning a field and the last is a bright white led for sorting things out.

Well I put my permission sheet on the dashboard in case any one should pass by and locked the truck up. Started walking down the field and scanned with the lower power torch and not a single rabbit could be seen, instead two foxes were out on patrol. Carried on and then the torch failed to work, tried swapping batteries and switches but to no avail. So I had to use the gun torch with its narrow beam for scanning and at this point the pressure switch started to fail and become very intermittent. Luckily I had a spare single on / off switch with a glow in the dark cap that could be used so carried on to the next field. This was a small grass field that has provided me with a large number of rabbits over the summer so I was very disappointed to find not a single rabbit out so decided to carry on just as a spied a rabbit out in the centre, moved over and set up for a clean shot only to find it was a myxi rabbit so left it for the foxes. Was seriously thinking about jacking it in and heading home as I couldn't see things getting any better.

Thought I'd just try the stubble field where I had a good number of pigeons a couple of weeks ago. Switched on the gun torch and easily spotted a good twenty or so rabbits feeding right out in the stubble. Using the low power of the gun torch I was able to work my way round this small field and pick off four nice rabbits before deciding to head home.

Will definitely need to find out what went wrong with the torches at the beginning as it could of been a ruined night.

Nice bunnies. When I started reading the write-up I was concerned. The more into it I read the more I thought....ah no, matey is having a harsh session. Good choice to check that field.

Glad it turned out okay.

Any idea what was up with the torches?

Still looking into what went wrong with the torches, mind you they are so cheap that a year or two's use out of them is perfectly adequate.

And your mod Matty works a treat. Just one question the torch is 300 lumens red are there any slightly brighter red ones out there?

I use the ultra fire torches and the same happens to me every now and again the switch is on a thread and some times the mounting turns its self up a bit if you take the lamp apart there is two indentations one at each side like center punch marks

if its tight just unscrew this and the clean the connections i find that that sorts it hope this helps nice shooting by the way atvbmac
