buster gonads 862
I do, but my mate drives it, pap,s his horn when something about to brake cover, and picks the header up out of the way, the dog soon learns to react to the sound of the horn. 1 Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
What's a condine ???............ A bit risky I think because a good dog is focused on it's prey and if the thing run towards those blades and makes a mistake it's good night 2 Quote Link to post

Tozer 385
Maybe just stick to my original idea of buying a couple of long nets. Edited July 31, 2014 by Tozer 2 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Used to do it. It's only worth your while when your down to the last acre or two and we used to rely on the driver standing up and looking into the corn to tell us something was on the move. But I do remember having to run at the combine to turn a fox that was heading back towards it. If I remember correctly he turned again and got to ground where we dug him. Quote Link to post
lurchers ireland 367
ground is very hard this time of year better off waiting for the season to start in september Quote Link to post

A bit risky I think because a good dog is focused on it's prey and if the thing run towards those blades and makes a mistake it's good night Thats why i only do it when my mates driving the combine, as you say, its a risky game, very handy if the first couple of cuts are infront of any sets you know of, you can either set the long net or stand by with the dog, or both if your a greedy fecker like me . PS, take plenty of water with you, its a hot dusty game for both dog and man. Edited August 1, 2014 by buster gonads Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I asked because it felt a bit risky. I guess the problm is as well that the ground has to be jard to harvest so you're not going to working in good conditions. Quote Link to post
buster gonads 862
I havent had any problems regarding hard ground, depending on what they are cutting theres usually a bed of swaff on the floor, keep away from Rape, now that is bad to run a dog on. Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I've had a spaniel get problems decoying over rape stubble. I was watching the combining in work it got me thinking. It is amazing what can be in a crop. Though I believe they are allowed to circle the field anymore; they have to leave a corridor to the hedge. Quote Link to post
MIK 4,763
How come every one on this site has a hard on for running dogs on hard ground ?...there will be enough give on a newly cut field with the stubble ....I started of following the combine as a kid throwing stones at bolting rabbits and pheasants which I became nae bad at then progressing onto a folding .410 in those days you could following the combine and put some miles in in a day but now with the modern machines especially the big masseys and claas 780 you cant keep up with them . I have had some very productive days at the combine and have farmers phone me when they are cutting ....I give the farmer a radio to contact me when he sees something ... I use the truck to position my self and dog and I have seen some amount of gear bolt on the last bout ...rape seems to hold big number of foxes these days ...good craic at the combine and we are weeks ahead this year all the winter barley is in most the rape and most the spring wheat is sprayed off and its only .just turned Aug . I had 3 foxes on thurs SHOT in a field of rape Edited August 2, 2014 by MIK 4 Quote Link to post
Tozer 385
I'll give it a go. Being honest I haven't clue I have 3/4 collie 1/4 spaniel here and 2 terriers so not out tgis season. It was just a genuine question on the forum. Picking my pup up in september so it will be 12 months before I get onto it. Cracking picture by the way. Reminds me of being a kid whilst dad was out welding trailers back up.
