A Few Woodies More...with Pics.

Recommended Posts

Out for less than an hour today, with the trusty old Falcon. In a week the woods had really greened up and everything's just that little bit harder to see. In all honesty i could have shot a bit more gear but I wanted to concentrate on the woodies. Apologies for the quality of the photos, the light was crap and I had my poor lens on, so they may be a bit blurry.

As luck would have it i watched a pair of jays feeding each other in some oaks, I know where their nest is so I might try and do some more pics of them when they're feeding young. the woods are full of jays here, there's absolutely loads of them. The jay is a marvelous birds, and although a corvid and a nest robber, it's habits are somewhat different from maggies and crows. They are pair bonded, nesting and rearing one clutch of chicks, which is usually four. The whole clutch stay with their parents as a family unit all throughout winter then go off on their own the following march as the weather warms, no doubt to start a family themselves. When they are together feeding they keep in touch by amazing noises, sounding more like a parrot than anything! This is also true when they are going out of their territory on feeding forays in winter, they cluck and whirl and gurgle to each other fascinating to hear.

the dog started winding something in a patch of brambles, i thought it was squirrel or something but no, it was a bleedin black cat. I don't want him chasing cats, and I shouted but it's hard to stop a dog like this when there's a cat a yard in front of his nose. Thankfully it got up a tree. Bloody nuisance they are and people shouldn't let them out into the woods.

The woodie in the photo was unaware of my presence, me and the dog slipped in to about thirty yards and dropped him like a bad habit! the next woodie was a very unusual shot, it was facing directly away from me, but a branch covered its vitals. Then, the bloody dog goes and spots a squirrel and takes off. So I'm thinking this stalks over, but the woodie turned his body and watched the dog chase the squirrel. This presented me with a shot and the pigeon spiralled dramatically down, landing almost on the dogs head!

I ended with four woodies, but could have had a couple of squirrels as well, but I left them, for other projects I have in mind......A great hour out, worth getting up for. Hope you guys enjoy the pics even though they are a bit shakey...JD
