Ferreting in rocks

Recommended Posts

Hi all, where i live there are alot of big piles of granite. Some of them are full of rabbits and others are deserted apart from the odd badger mark where they mark there territory. There is also the risk if your ferret lays up how do you get him out?! I have never ferreted in one of these piles and was wondering has anyone ever done so and what is your opinion on it :hmm: ??

Thanks

Richard

I've just cleared some undergrowth at the side of a field as I noticed rabbits running in there and wanted to enter the ferrets.

After clearing the brambles it was clear that the mound underneath is a huge pile of rocks and stones pushed off the field by farmers over the years.

The rabbits have tunnelled through them and made a good sized warren.

Then I reached the same question...how would i dig down?

I've decided to resist the temptation as the only way to dig down would be to remove large boulders one at a time, apart from being very hard work I'm sure there would be a risk of crushing the ferret everytime a boulder is dislodged.Thats asuming the locator will penetrate them in the first place.

That said, nothing ventured nothing gained so if someone has tried it and posts a reply to you I may give in to the temptation! Good question anyway!

I presume he means, any small type 2 stroke engine, chainsaw being easy to carry, over mix with the oil, and a pipe running from the exhaust

smoke the rabbits out

although the use of exhaust gasses to gas is illegal, so we wouldent use that :whistling:

A mate with a terrier locator, could not locate his terrier with the MK 3 threw rock, so he got a bellman and flint locator, does the job fine, but he cant dig down to the terrier.

Personally, id stay well clear.

F*ck me! Here we go again!

How about ye simply feed ye ferrets right and then net up and slip them in there? Easy peasy, lemon f*cking squeezy!

Does No One know how to keep and work a bloody ferret these days??? :wallbash:

Now abuse me. Like last time, I've said my piece and I'm off. I haven't the life expectency left to argue with whingers.

ditchy

are you seriously trying to tell me a ferret thats been fed cant get stuck under ground ?

certain situations are beyond the control of the ferret, example rabbit goes into a stop end followed by the ferret another rabbit comes in behind the ferret, and the ferret is blocked in , this has happened to me on a number of occassions dont make any difference if the ferrets been fed or not it cant get out of the tube, there fore you have a lie up  unless the stones can be removed if you have a sticker your better off giving the set a wide berth as said before you can stink the rabbits out by using red diesel soaked rags ect then ferret the rabbits in more accesible places or use other methods to take them out traps or snares its up to you now to make the decision

 Sympathise with you Richard and Mooster,...and personaly,.I would not be keen to put ferrets into deep holes in the rocks,.but,.IF I was to do so,... :D ..I would enter a brace of 'BOLT OR FECKING DIE ' merchants :D

We use these Karate trained pugs on the deep chalk warrens,.and they do what it says on the can...

So,..Be brave bonny lads,...and get them rabbits caught... :toast:

All the best,.CHALKWARREN.... :drink::drink::drink::drink::drink:
