I think most folk gave decent answers, just many disagreed with using them? I honestly do hope I'm still at it at your age, if your ever down scotch corner way you more than welcome to see my dogs, just because I don't agree with your thoughts on supplements I'm sure you could teach us a few other things

I wonder if some you fellows have run dogs or not, the lad asked the question, about supplements, I gave a genuine answer,

my dogs are well and fit, and I am not too bad either, I wonder if some you fellows will be walking and running dogs @68

I dont think so have a look at the number of posts that have been placed by some of you people you, must be at the computer 24/7,

that old you have loads of posts so dont do a lot, sausage :laugh: sorry but i can log on here from a pigeon hide/roost shoot/whilst lamping ferreting infact anywhere in any situation, but in truth my post count equates to around 7 per day, plus a good few of these are made in my role as a moderator and not for my own enjoyment, i too gave a genuine answer but it would seem because you disagree its not as genuine as yours!!!, however my dogs are fit and well even though they range from 6 to 15 infact i'm out shooting with a member later and using an eleven year old lurcher to pick up find and flush, all with no added supplements so marmite is not confined to jars

No paulus, two or 3 you guys were trying to be smart, trying to show that no other person knows how to do the job, I put the photos of my dogs up, to stop the stupid nonsense, do you think we pour bottles of shite down the dogs neck, to blow there kidneys out as one fellow tried to state, I watch very carefully what goes in the dogs mouth and what comes out, the next day, I am sure the young fellow is as much confused now than he was in the beginning, as for a balanced diet, you see what they put in the human food chain, who analyssis the protien in a bag of dried dog food?? who does analysis, of the raw meat you give the dogs,or any other dog food, dried dog food is away of getting rid of all the shite, yes an appointed, health inspector will go round the factory once a week or once a month, and take a couple of random samples, the consumer is the dog,

the owner, takes for granted what is written on the bag is genuine, the owner, the handler, he tries to feed the best, and his eye tells him if he is doing right, and the performance of the dog is the proof,(((( but not always, the Hunting life circus,

as i said a healthy diet, in my book dried meat flavoured kibble advertised as x% protein is not a healthy diet if fed on its own less so when that protein is mainly vegetable based, its just a cheap to feed a dog correctly as it is to feed it easily. diet and exercise are the key to a healthy dog, it really is that simple, electrolytes are a difficult subject as you're trying to fix a problem after it has occurred. again the key would be to not let the dog get into a position where that problem arrises but thats far easier to say then do, i am a beliver in a spoon of honey a day though if that counts as a supplement then i'm guilty

Supplements are wasted on the avarage dog that just goes out and does a couple of rabbits a night but for lads that are serious about there dogs being the best they can be pushing there dogs to the limit every time out weather it be lamping, daytime or racing they can be essential. Look at any top sports man, footballer, boxer, runner all will use supplements of some kind, dogs are no different.

i have seen evidence of this. lucozade sport sponsors loads of things if it does nothing else it certainly supplements a few sportsmans earnings, a fit dog will handle the workload without supplements if you're pushing a dog to far then eventually it will break no matter what you putting into it. even machines break when not looked after correctly, unless there is a deficiency and you understand why that deficiency is occurring then why feed anything other than what should naturally give the dog what it needs,

This all sounds very American to me

Doesnt everything sound American today.D ya kinda know where im coming from dude? I use electrolites after work. I give Feramo and cod liver oil every other day. My dogs are fed on traditional stews with meat and veg with a sprinkle of good meal like Aussie formula. I think stews help to keep moisture in the dog and they love it. I also give some calci D. to pups plus goats milk and eggs to them aswell as to the workers in winter. I feed terriers exactly the same. I think its important though to always look at each dog individually especially with regards to portions. All dogs need to be observed every day and fed accordingly.

you have just about got it right the biggest los of condition in a dog is low red blood count if you are not feeding raw beef then you need Iorn supplement for hard running vitmine E this is for muscles but don't give together in same meal one morning other at night

I know you cant give iron and E the same day because they work against each other. I dont use E because mine get plenty of raw flesh aswell as cooked.

I give my pup an egg every day or so. I also read on another site that egg including the shell (powdered up) is good too. My thoughts are that there is so much science in modern dog foods, especially the 'specialist' running foods that a normal diet using these with water etc as said and the additional egg, meat etc will give them all they need.

some people cannot see the wood for the trees, I wrote feeding and giving supllements is an art, ((((( if you think your dog does not requires electrolytes, after

a hard days running, then simple do not waste your money,,,,,, ((( But when you see your dog cramping up, staggering,,, there is a ??? mark,

cramping, acidosis, rhabdomyolysis exercise induced collapse are all a result of heat resulting in potassium etc leaching from the muscles into the bloodstream if the levels of these leaks are too great then the kidneys struggle to filter them out, if the heat, exercise continues past a certain point then the muscles will break themselves down completely in an attempt to convert them to the sugar the body needs to continue running, the first action if any of these situations occurs is to cool the dog as fast as possible, ideally by immersion in water, after an episode the dog will have an enhanced thirst often known as coursing thirst, along with this increased water intake will come extended periods of urinating, the body is trying to flush the toxins out of the system, the more serious the episode the more dangerous dehydration becomes and the possibility of kidney failure is increased, if anyone is unsure then for the dogs sake take it to a good working dog vet,

as for electrolytes then i can understand giving some glucose but adding more of what's being leached into the bloodstream just seams a little daft, knowing the kidneys are already working to the max trying to filter what's already in the blood stream .

i have a prevention that works along the line of most supplements, i'm calling it canine hydration cubes, it comes in a bottle and all you do is pour it into the supplied tray and place in the freezer each day remove 3 cubes and add to the dogs food, all this is available for a very reasonable 25 quid including p&p
