Nik_B 3,791
I used to work off Aberdeen and Norwich. Got a bit boring so ended up going overseas to North Africa and the Middle East. Good luck Edit: Oh and LOL to the 'North Sea Tigers' they ran like fook when they had to come to the desert lol
IanB 0
I've worked offshore in the north sea for 14 year

Born Hunter 17,909
What are the shifts offshore? So many weeks on, so many weeks off? I'm looking for a career change in the future, it's an option depending on what I can find.

I'm looking for a career change in the future, it's an option depending on what I can find. I started out in mudlogging, it used to be 2 on and 2 off for me but I wasn't on a proper rotation like some of the others. In the end two weeks off wasn't enough, it took a few days to decompress after a job (usually came home after working nights) and then a few days before going back I'd get a bit stressed out so I went overseas to do longer hitches. For two years I was on 4 on 4 off which was the best really. Then I got a job as MWD running the down hole drilling tools, the hitches got longer (up to 7 or 8 weeks) and the time off less certain. After than I got in to geosteering which is what I still do although these days I mostly do it from home...the joys of the internet

I'm on a 9-5 in R&D for borehole logging, hydrocarbon and mineral. 3 years next month and tbh I'm getting bored, maybe look into field engineer which I imagine to be similar to offshore work in terms of work hours. I don't think I have it in me to do the geoscience thing anymore than I have to now, the geoscientists I work with never leave their desks! But they do get a fair bit of international travel. Nik_B 3,791
Sounds like field engineer on MWD/LWD (measurement/logging whilst drilling) could be the ticket alternatively wireline logging. Both are field engineer jobs. If you have some knowledge of geoscience it can be helpful but to be honest a lot of them did some form of engineering degree and not geology like myself. The main difference between those two jobs is MWD is closer to a rotation but Wireline (especially Sclumberger) seem to get worked to death. Mudlogging is geoscience but working offshore, your job is to look at the cutting samples to make geological logs, gets boring quick and the pay is crappy, then they move up to data engineer which is monitoring the drilling data and is a lot more responsibility although the money is still crap lol. For the MWD/Wireline jobs you are responsible for rigging up the unit/cabin (that is rare offshore) building your tools and then logging the data either whilst drilling or with wireline after or before drilling depending on the type of wireline run. From MWD/LWD you can easily move up to directional driller which is where the money is. MWD can be ok but it can get boring after a while, it is also known as Movies Whilst Drilling I only know about the drilling side of the oil industry and specialise in Formation Evaluation and Geo-steering which is the new big thing. But if you want any more info let me know

Got experience in a few other tool types. I'm seeing what happens here but considering my future. I like the idea of working weeks on and weeks off. What you have said has been really helpfull. I may well drop you a few PMs when I start getting serious. Edited September 11, 2013 by Born Hunter
