onthehunt 40
Saw a mate this evening who has just acquired some kits around 14 weeks, 2 hobs 2 jills, who he is planning to breed at some point. lovely kits good as gold etc but he has just found out that 1 hob and jill had been neutered at 4 weeks Is this normal? anyone come across kits like this? As the kits came from different places the other 2 are ok. The guy he got the kits from is apparently a breeder and won't refund him. He's pissed off and rightly so. Never heard of kits being neutered at such a young age here and wondering what kind of vet would agree to do it. Quote Link to post

Something iffy about this IMO,why would any vet perform such operations on ferrets of that age,why would anyone want this done at that age and pay for the procedure only to sell them on,if the breeder charged £20 a kit they still wouldn't break even on even a large litter.....also would have thought the RCVS would have something to say about it 1 Quote Link to post

ferretracer 24
in the states they neuter them that young its not recomended and over here most vets wont do it till at least 6 months which is the recomended minium i get all my lot neutered between 6-8months have done for years and even the rescues i deal with do Quote Link to post
Glaswegian 4
Bollocks costs £50 to get them done he wouldnt do that them sell them and they have to mature before its even possible Quote Link to post
onthehunt 40
The price of kits makes me giddy, they cost £55 just normal run of mill ferrets. am not saying anything as him and I already had a discussion about that. He literally has the certification saying they were done at 4 weeks and other 'papers'. apparently nobody else in his area had kits but the ones he has seem bright and healthy. What gets me is the early sterilizing as I've read it can lead to serious complications somethings definitely wrong here cos we're not in the US Quote Link to post
AndyKelly 251
the hobs balls wouldnt have even dropped yet sounds really fishy to me 2 Quote Link to post
GreyRake 108
Does sound strange. American farms neuter at six weeks so maybe four is possible. Did your friend not do his homework first? I wouldn't have taken that deal. Wonder why the breeder felt the need to do that, did he ask? He doesnt think hes got one of these super angora black eyed white breeds or something, haha, he wants to keep to himself? 2 Quote Link to post
tote 870
Is it me or does this just not add up. He bought the kits with ideas to breed them in the future but has the paperwork to say they've bee doctored . 1 Quote Link to post

He bought the kits with ideas to breed them in the future but has the paperwork to say they've bee doctored . Yeah that's what I said but you don't expect the kits your buying to have been doctored do you? but they came with a pedigree lol so that should have been a red flag that someone's either trying it on or is actually a fancy ferret breeder . They are normal ferrets though the guy bred angoras too This was only found out when he read the aftercare. I can understand why fancy angoras would be doctored though not at 4 weeks.
