BORDERSCOT 3,816
The brains of a gsd are hard to beat but most lurcher men / lads don't go for brains... So they have more courage than a collie, stamina, are very hard to steal, a good coat , good feet .. Yeah I can see why they are not more popular ,, So, if they bring all of the above to the table, why aren't they more popular......??? Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
Litter wastage... Even Hancock couldn't shift his litter and that was when the golden boy of deerslaying was spouting his shit to fools . 1 Quote Link to post
Bossie 90
Why aren't they more popular? -Proper working stock in GSD is very expensive, €600 and up for a pup from working ped. parents. -They take quite a while to mature mentally and physically -Can be larger than needed, however some can be quite lean. If you'd use a working bred shepherd x you'd solve this. -The alternative to a GSD, the working shepherd is not as available in the UK as it is over on the continent and not at the same price (very cheap performance dogs) However on the continent people don't run dogs (except for spain) so obviously they are not crossed. -Kennel blindness, why use a GSD/shepherd if a Collie suits you and is a national product. Absolutely no offence intended, but I do think national sentiments play a very large part in dog breeding globally. I think a working shepherd like the ones posted by me in the 3/4 reverse thread would be a better choice, to use in a lurcher breedig. Especially physically (compared to a GSD) since they will have less litter wastage due to overly big animals in a litter. They might be a bit vocal, wouldn't know. If anyone would like to try I'm happy to help in finding a very good stud dog or a bitch witch might suit your breeding plans. 1 Quote Link to post

Because They don't write books about the gsd x lurcher / greyhound my old merle fan..As for litter waste you get that in most lurcher and terriers,,, If your honest out of most litters of lurchers more will fail ,,, some because of bad owners ,,, some because they dont get the right cross for what they are hunting ... This is my best answer in my best hand writing Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Nah, I still reckon if they were really on par with the more common lurcher crosses then there would be more about. Yes on paper it looks good. But maybe in reality it just doesn't happen? 1 Quote Link to post

You have never seen one work a good gsd will try its best (give 100%) also with brains to make the training a bit less of a chore .. also This x did win obedience trails .. Now how many other lurcher x can say this ... yeah collies but how many is there of them ... + they are a little harder to steal ,, I dont want everyone to have one ... I just fancied a easy to train lurcher ... No offence ment to anyone .. like your hawk too Quote Link to post

I just fancied a easy to train lurcher ... No offence ment to anyone .. like your hawk too I am guessing mate yes, never seen one work. Im not saying there arent good ones or they cant make good lurchers. But to regularly produce better dogs the purpose bred stuff we have about us now? If they were then SURELY they would be as popular as collie x, bull x, beddy x etc? The brains CAN be a disadvantage with training, I know lads who have had hell up with half cross collie greys, they are just too clever for their own good. Im not sure why people go on about brain SO much in a working dog, yes a bit is great but they dont need to do obedience trials and i firmly believe there is a difference between "hunting brain" and "obedience brain". Come watch my bitch on the lamp, or hunting cover in the day, you would say she had the brains of a full collie. Come watch me try to do sit, stay, down type "tricks" with her, she can make me look a right dick, lol. I arent knocking the GSD cross at all, as you say ive never seen one work, just trying to work out why they arent more popular. Cheers Gaz Edited to add: Its not my hawk mucka, its a mates. I wish it was mine! Quote Link to post

bobby blackheart 1,209
theres a few daywalkers have dogs with a dash of gsd in them-none the wiser-3 out of 3 and all that- top coursing dog(if you could call it that) lined to half x gsd/grey and throw pups that lookswise all yous hare men would give right arm for-infact a few were stolen and are probably in yards of some of the cocks on here-they will throw the sable colour and the truth will be out there what excuses then?
