How do you know ? quite a few lads have took them back in the day before the silly ban and not just with bull crosses either

To those that said reds could not be taken with lurchers, well its a pity you did,nt get out more and open your eyes before the silly ban came into force. I am only talking hinds and biggish pricket,s

Did you get paid for the foxes Matt or just do it for the crack ??

A bit of both

Living in hunting country, the opportunities to make money out of redskins was not common.

I did sell skins when they were worth a bit, and those tails went off to some scooter boys for £5 a pop.

On some permission one day doing a bit of rough shooting with the mutts, and the old gal nailed a fox. I'd just wrestled the fecking thing off her when the first foxhound appeared... "hounds must have chopped it" the hunstman said  then goes on to ask me if I'd dig a fox out for them as they didn't have a terrierman for their wednesday meets.

I obliged them (being the gent I am) and later that evening had a call to offer me a job with them. I declined; £60 a week was what was on offer, and at that time I was doing £600+.

Sometimes you wonder if you made all the right decisions in life.........

Millet, stamp your feet, slam some doors and then pop off to bed.

But please, stop ruining a perfectly good thread with your childish tantrum.

Which I've answered.

Matt did you catch the big stags ?? how did the dog work them ?? Grab a leg and cause a trip then hang on for grim death ??

Imagine it would be like watching a David Attenborough documentary..

I have to admit I never went out purposely after the big boys, but I'd be lying if I said it never happened.

Being both a dog man and a gun man back then, I'd rather stick the rifle out of the truck window than piss about with the dog to be honest.

Some of the lads I knocked about with then did it regular and made big money; there are few roe in that area and fallow are practically non-existent. Saw one of my old pals not long ago and he's out of the dog lark altogether now. I do, however, know that some lads are still at it, and still catching plenty.

Those big dogs tend to just bite and pull like mad; once on the ground you need to get there fairly quick before those horns do their worst....

keep the scanner warm and get some more pics :victory:

Sadly, I have very few photos from that era. Partly because I didn't own a camera, partly because in those days you had to run the gauntlet of the girl behind the counter in boots, and partly because when I got married my Mrs chucked alot of stuff away.

A couple of fallow; I can't give the dog credit for them, and to be honest, I can't even remember when, where or how. I did travel a bit in those days, and sold quite a heap of venison.

For me, Red Deer venison would be at the bottom of the heap when it comes to flavour and taste, especially hunted deer. Give me a nice lump of fallow any day of the week!

When did we come in to the digital agr regarding cameras??

I was born in the 80's and remember film cameras but cant rember when I went digital..

Yes i bet everyone has much more pictures these days.. I took that many once I sickened myself

Did the dogs take mauch stick then or were they well skilled at what they done ?? Could they fairly tenderise the meat ??

I have never tasted shot meat.. Mate had some that he was gifted and said the flavour was much better than a dogged one.. Pre 2004 of course :victory:

Digital cameras came in 10-15 years ago I think..... even then, my digital pictures are pretty appalling!

The dogs did used to take a bit of stick from time to time, but the good ones knew their job and knew the right place to hold

Tenderise the meat? Not on your nelly! Give me shot venison over dogged venison any day!

In the ranks of 'great hunters of deer with dogs' I'm fairly low on the list. As I said earlier, I was always more of a terrier and gun kinda guy... that old bitch was 'gifted' to me as her owner wasn't working her and she was going round the bend. When I got her she was in an appalling state, and could barely walk more than half a mile. 15 kilos less fat, and some gradual roadwork and she did most of what I wanted her to do.

She'd not have won any competitions or matches, but there's more to owning a dog than what everyone else thinks of it

I'm pretty sure that line continues down there to this day. Good, solid, freezer filling mutts.

Where they taken out in the open or when they hit cover ??

I must admit its not my thing. I would however of liked to see a proficient lurcher take to the task, it would be a eye opener for me.

I recon it would be good getting regular beasts of that size for feeding yourself, family and dogs :victory:

Go back and read what I've written.

I've already answered.

Now that's enough. Pack it in or feck off. No-one is interested in your petty little tantrum.

Both.

The lampers would often catch them in the middle of a field; often the trouble was picking a good one to run out of a big herd.

I've also seen them driven in cover with dogs during the day.

I'm afraid it's never been my thing either really; but those lads certainly knew how to get the job done quickly and quietly.

As for feeding yourself and your dogs; I'd rather eat rabbit to be honest. Red deer venison is an acquired taste
