Born Hunter 17,960
There only seems to be good points to living back then. People respected the law and each other a lot more. I'm sure there was plenty of bad Walshie. Poor healthcare, poverty, work safety conditions, the justice system (I wonder how many people convicted were really guilty and how many guilty ran free due to piss poor forensic science?), many relatives dead in the aftermath of WWI, WWII only a matter of years away. Rose tinted glasses and all that... Quit de-rosing my specs! Were spectacles invented by the 1920's?
marshman 7,758
I think the country seemed a lot cleaner and greener without so many cars and roads, so to anybody with an interest in the countryside it going to seem like a beutifull place and it probably was !No doubt life was a lot harder back then compared to today , if you just said the brake throughs in medicines and surgery from then 1920s to today is remarkable ! Life seemed a lot simpler back then, I know its easy for me to say I haven't got children with rickets lol. Oh well at least they didn't have to put up with mad fundamentalist chopping them up on their own streets !
Nik_B 3,791
Not sure about that bud Every one burned house coal and the air around even small towns would have been filthy. The countryside had much more industry in it back then as well compared to today, lots of pollution of rivers and the general landscape.
marshman 7,758
@nik b. yer never thought of that ! Got to say though that film of London seems a lot cleaner than it does today . Hmm I wonder if asthma was as bad as it is today lol ?
Nik_B 3,791
Have a look at this for example.. I studied in Camborne. The landscape these days is very nice and attracts tourists etc but in the 1800s and early 1900s it was a hideous wasteland. A lot of rural areas would have looked pretty nasty back then especially if there was mining or or extraction going on. The mills would have polluted the crap out of the rivers up north where I live. In short many nice rural ares we have now used to be industrial wastelands.
Sirius 1,391
Fascinating piece of video IMO Really tried to refrain from making a comment about it probably being a lot more fecking coloured these days but I failed! I think its amazing how much it hasn't changed, other than the vehicles and people, the buildings and roads are so similar to how it was then. Great link Malt Edited May 23, 2013 by Sirius
marshman 7,758
@nik b. I suppose it depends on where you're from ,I agree if your from an mining town or any industrial town then yes , but I'm from the garden of England and it was a lot less polluted than it is today! As a whole I think Britain was a far greener place than it is today surely ?
