secretagentmole 1,701
just out of interest how many parents on here allow there kids to join the scouts?or is all this current child abuse scandals make you keep them away from such organisations? My youngest lad was at cubs but he got bored of it. Because of his diabetes he couldn't go on the trips and I suppose felt a bit left out so didn't want to go anymore. Why not? I was a cub and a scout, I have been diabetic since I was 10, never stopped me going on the trips! Hell to get the camping badge quicker me and a friend got permission to camp on some farmland in the half term in February, the camp site was inspected by the Scout Master, pronounced to be fine, our food stock levels were determined to be adequate, water supply (from farm a mile away) good. Toilet (big hole dug in ground with farmer's permission) was fine too! You can go on cub and scout trips if you are diabetic. Don't let that hold him back!

secretagentmole 1,701
So? Scout camps are usually well served affairs close to roads on their own camp sites (well they are round here anyway). Problems with hypos need correcting, modification of insulin, change of diet, but they should not hold you back. Especially these days with mobile phones, hell I was on a night hike exercise in 1983 without a mobile, 10 miles from 6pm til midnight, navigation by map and compass, proper scouts! We won that year too! Hypos can be corrected with sweets, biscuits, coca cola and hypostop, heck have they not got a scout with a first aid badge? Thee days with glucometers you are able to achieve much better control of diabetes than you ever could in my youth with only urine testing!
