Problem With Young Lurcher

Recommended Posts

So heres my problem, I have a 15 month old saluki cross lurcher bitch who has been coming out lamping with my older bitch regularly since around 12 months old, she has seen many rabbits caught but I just cant get her started, she just will not chase. I have kept running dogs for many years but have never encountered this before. I have walked up to countless squatters and slipped her as the rabbit makes for home and she stands and watches it flee. I have tried running her along side her kennel mate but when slipped she will trot a few yards and stop and watch the other bitch work the rabbit., there have even been occasions when the older bitch has been twisting and turning the rabbit only feet in front and she just stands. If the older dog catches she will try to grab at the rabbit but just wont work it herself.

I dont really want to give up on her as in other ways she is excellent, her obedience and other qualities are really good, but this refusal to chase is frustrating the hell out of me :censored: Has anyone else encountered this,or does anyone one have any ideas on how to overcome this problem.

Cheers

I had a kelpie cross that was given to me from a pet home as they dint want her, that hadbeen trained not to chase and i had same problem as you.... the only way i got her to chase was to take both my

That's a strange one mate, some dogs obviously mature later than others but not chase atall or even have the incline!!!! Your not married to an anti who beats the dog with dead rabbits lol. Saluki cross eh :D

I know mate just doesnt show any drive at all, see plenty of rabbits and squirrels during the day too and will just watch them, she is very babyish still but should be showing some sign by now surely!!

I'd like to think there would be something. Does she chase anything, ball, rabbit skin, etc? As willow says just need to wait till she matures

she will chase a ball , a dummy and will chase her kennel mate and other dogs whilst playing so I suppose theres potential there. Im not into passing dogs around at all so would hate to give up and apart from that she really is a faithful young bitch

As willow says, the penny will drop in time. I've never seen a dog as old as that watch rabbits run away, tbh, I've never had any dog any age watch something run away without trying to chase but it must happen. Just need to get her out as much as possible mate, hopefully watching the other dog she'll realize she is a dog too lol. Maybe if you run with it too lol, encourage her, give the other dog a lot of fuss when it chases. I'd say make a lot of noise to egg her own but she might be timid.

Did yours just stand and watch mate? I've had dogs run half hearted, not taking the lead in a chase but stand and watch?
