whippet 99 2,613
Yea mate, it was just the real dogmen tag that irked me lol. I totally understand what your saying and I too like to respect the quarry. I wouldn't take a hare from its form if the dogs on the lead etc. but 100 yard slips just ain't practical. If a hares in a tight field 20 yards away and running, cover is yards away, I pretty much think in that situation 20 yards is fair law. You wait any longer and it's gone. Yes you could chose not to run it but f**k that, we can't be choosy in this game I'm afraid. I always ok most of the time lol let the hare get its stride before the dogs slipped and to be honest, most hares are more in the 200 yards away bracket than the 20 i dont know why i put that its a little cringeworthy so i changed it.................. inan 841
I know its hard sometime in ireland with small fields. But on good open land if a hare gets up at your feet would u give it a bit of a start . Said it before and I'll say it again, I wouldn't give anything an inch, it's not sport or testing your dog or whatever, it's HUNTING, and the quicker your dog can catch something the better. And whilst I can appreciate coursing dogs etc, I can also see where antis etc get alot of their ammunition from. The sooner people stop calling hunting 'sport' the better If you aren't giving a hare any "law", ie, a chance to get up out of it's seat, and into it's stride, I wouldnt call it hunting either. I'd call it murder, but each to their own I suppose, Quote Link to post

I know the subject is hares, but it's the same principal. To me the fact that people keep calling hunting 'sport' has been one of the major factors as to why it's been banned. And I know there are other political reasons, but that's a huge subject that others more politically inclined than me would be more able to go in to 1 Quote Link to post

Coursing [preban,] is not ferreting, bushing, bolting to dogs or whatever else . The principal of single handed coursing is to pit your dog against a hare, to do that, and make a contest out of it, you have to give the hare fair law. The principal of two- handed coursing is to match two dogs against each other, not the hare. If you just want to kill a hare, then take it out of its seat in a kick up , where many moderate dogs will pick it up before it gets up to speed. I'm not getting into an argument about semantics , it seems this forum has become rent a row for many, as I said ,each to there own. 1 Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
The hare is treated like this mythical creature by some and if don't do it properly your not showing the hare the respect its due, watching a good course especially one with law given is a sight to behold. The initial part watching the dog make up the ground to get the first turn in is something I love watching, unfortunately I've never really owned a "hare dog" so most hares I've ever caught have been hunted up and I can count how many I've taken out of the seat on one hand. If you give the hare law its coursing but if you don't its hunted up, 2 different types of hunting. Quote Link to post

Are you saying only hares should only be taken if given law? Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
law should be given every time, thats up to the man though, if its sport then to me fair law applies, cos ya only cheat the dog and yaself with easy kills and thats fine if ya can live with it, problem comes when ya tell others how good said top classhare killer is then some one calls ya out Quote Link to post

baw 4,360
The hare is a mystical creature though, it deserves respect. If your just wanting to kill hares, fair dos, do what you want. But there is nothing like watching a hare trying to out class your dog, nothing comes close. I've lumped them, kicked them up, you name it but you learn in this game, something's are just taking liberties. Let the hare run, give it some chance otherwise, what's the point? For the pot maybe, just doesn't sit right with me. 1 Quote Link to post
