how many dogs

Recommended Posts

Got 3 lurchers & 1 terrier at the minute. The eldest is 7 & never been up to the grade anyway (thick) but once i get a dog it stays. Then there's Grace (stainton bred) excellent bitch, kept a pup back from Grace & hopefully she will follow in her mothers footsteps :thumbs:

That's it now though no more, 4 is plenty when you've got to work & a house to keep. Nowt gets done if i don't do it. Can't be feckin' wonder woman forever :doh::doh::whistling:

I hope you don't mind a new bloke chippin in on this one.

I own two young lurchers one of which is still a pup, five month to be exact and another older bitch. I personally wouldn't want to own any more than that as I don't think I would be able to find the time to work them. It's not just a question of time either, enless your very privileged to have acres and acres of land to work your dogs over or you just poach where you like then your ristricted that way too.

Also IMO it's important to build a strong bond with your dog so the more you have the harder it is to achieve a true connection.

You need an awful lot of work to realy test one lurcher, its hard to give two enough work IMHO. I have had two on a few occasions, but i have to say the very best times were all had when just one was in the kennel, running all night every other night really shows the dogs for what they are....JMHO

i have 1 working bull x 7 1/2 years old , 1 bull x pup 11months old , 1 collie/grey pup 8months old and i'm taking a pup from a mating of my bull x dog .....also have 2 reliable working terriers and 3 terrier pups and a staffy bitch also a staffy x ebt that's 11 in total , where the f**k did they all come from ??????????? :yahoo::yahoo:

How is it possible to keep 11 dogs fit and worked? I would struggle with more than 2!!

I got one old dog, and a Pup. Hopefully have a Lucher sometime next year.......

1 bull x is retired , 1 bull x is a 11 month old pup and is not starting work until 12 months old , collie x grey is 8 months old and not starting work until 12 months old ....... staffy bitch is in house dog and back yard , staffy x ebt is guard dog in my kennels/ yard/workshop she never goes out of yard coz she is to nasty to have out in public , that leaves 5 terriers all of which are outside in kennels , as for excersize i walk all the lurchers together 5 miles every morning , and my wife takes care of the terriers ....... DEDICATED :feck::feck::feck:

i was just thinking and wondering :hmm: how many running dogs can you work to there full potencial e.g. ive got my allrounder and lamp dog ..and if everthing goes to plan a coursing pup on its way around october for me two is enough ..i think a lamping dog or allrounder should be going out at the very least two nights a week and a day at the weekend ..iam not on about going for walks iam on about working them hard ...and a coursing dog wants too be worked about two days a week thats my spare time so to speak used up ....i know lads have more dogs and lasses ....but how the hell do you find the time to work them as they should be worked ....question is really how many dogs do you think you can work as they should be worked >??????iam talking about and avrage..(spell  ) person with an lets say for e.g. starts work at 730 -5pm ...

ps the most i have ever had in my kennel running dogs that is ...is two

Two for me. But one is now officially retired so that only leaves one working lurcher and he has several knocked up toes, so im not able to get out as much as i'd like to. It is really frustrating sitting in on 'perfect nights' because you had him out the night/day before and is now lame.

Ive got 2 terriers but because they are bushing, ratting (coursing  ) terriers they work everytime they go out and are fit and content because of it.

I NEED another lurcher, but because mine stay with me till the end time and space is a problem.

what happens when your one and only dog gets injured ?

once the seasons here i dont seem to get that many injuries...touch wood. Most injuries (i have found) come from running on hard ground. I have ran a single dog all season before now and they have had to be laid off twice, once with a munty stabbing them and once when i was (trying) to run on chalk..

Two dogs are great and a back up, but its when they are left at home that they start to be a nusiance :icon_eek::clapper:

JMHO, its each to their own.....bgut i would rather have one good 'un than several disobebdient indifferent ones....how people can properly bond with a group of lurchers i do not know....its not about the kill, its about that special bond between human and dog...

some interesting points on this post , i used to have the one bull x still got him , i worked this dog every night when he was younger , and during the day on weekends with terriers , having said that i don't suppose i need to point out how much of a hard time he has had ..... to get back to the point ...and that is ...i have every intention of line breeding from this bull x mentioned above simply because he is a fecking good dog , the bull x pup i mentioned earlier is his daughter , she is 11 months and will be starting work next month , and then i have a hancocks bred collie x grey that will be starting work in november .....up to now basic training has been pretty straight forward and enjoyable i'll keep you all posted as of my dogs progress ..... who knows at this rate i might even write a book on the subject and make a packet whilst i'm at it :yahoo:

WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT BONDING WITH MORE THAN ONE DOG IT CAN BE DONE EASILY IF YOU GET THEM AT DIFFERENT STAGES IN THERE LIFES FOR E.G. MY LAMP DOG WILL BE AROUND TWENTY MONTHS OLD WHEN MY PUP ARRIVES....WHEN THAT PUP ARRIVES IT WILL GO EVERYWHERE WITH ME FOR THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF ITS LIFE IT WILL COME TO WORK WITH ME AS I WORK OUTSIDE ..IT WILL GET SOCIALISED WITH PEOPLE WHO I WORK WITH AND WILL BE WITH ME ALL THE TIME ..THATS WHAT I DO WITH ALL MY DOGS AT FIRST IT WILL BE HOUSE TRAINED AND LIVE IN THE HOUSE FOR THEM FIRST THREE MONTHS AND THE GRADUALLY INTOUDUCED TO ITS KENNEL BIT BY BIT I HAVE NEVER HAD TO MUCH OFF A PROBLEM WITH HOWLING OR RIPPING THE KENNEL IN BITS UP TO NOW FINGERS CROSSED :D THE FIRST FEW MONTHS IMO ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT OFF A PUPS LIFE AS FAR AS BONDING GOES I KNOW IT TAKES LONGER BUT YOU ARE ITS NEW PACK LEADER SO TO SPEAK ... OR ITS MUM OR DAD TO PUT IT SOFTLY ... :D WHAT I MEAN IS IF YOU GET TWO YOUNG DOGS OR PUPS AT THE SAME TIME I THINK FOR ONE ITS HARDER TO TRAIN THEM AND TWO YOU DONT GET THE SAME SORT OFF BOND WITH THE DOG UNLEES YOU DONT WORK AND YOU HAVE THE TIME TO TAKE THEM OUT SEPRETLY THEN IT CAN BE DONE ..... WHEN THAT PUP WAKES UP IN THE MORINING THE FIRST THING IT WILL SEE IS ME AND ME FEEDING IT AND I WILL BE THE LAST THING IT SEES AT NIGHT IAM ITS PROVIDER ITS PROTECTER AND EVRYTHING ELSE TO THE PUP ......THATS HOW I DO IT ,,...AND IT WORKS FOR ME ....

ALL THE BEST SNOOP.. :D

P.S. I ALSO THINK I CAN OR SHOULD I SAY I KNOW I CAN WORK TO DOGS HARD OR TO THERE FULL POTENCIAL BECAUSE ONE IS A DAYTIME DOG AND THE OTHER A LAMP DOG IF I HAD TWO LAMP DOGS I THINK I WOULD STRUGGLE TO WORK THEM BOTH HOW THEY SHOULD BE WORKED AS DONT DOUBLE MY DOGS UP OR TAKE TWO OUT LAMPING AT A TIME IMO A DOG SHOULD BE WELL CAPERBLE OF TACKLING ANYTHING IT MEETS BY ITSELF ......

MOLL.

I AGREE TO A POINT MR DARCEY BUT IF IT WASNT ABOUT THE KILL AND ALL ABOUT THE BONDING THEN ANY DOG WOULD DO ...WHY GET A DOG THAT IS BRED FOR WORKING IF ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS TICKLE IT UNDER ITS CHIN .. :D OF COURSE ITS ABOUT THE KILL ASWELL ....OR ABOUT THE COURSE :D

How on earth can one expect to maintain six dogs, imo its irresponsible to retain so many dogs in ones yard, please don’t take this question wrong but with so many farmers out there is this the reason you have these dogs?

There are lots of reasons why people have more than one dog. I have three which will soon be four, all my dogs are fed, housed, trained, exercised, worked and come to work with me. I have only been involed in one litter(I owned the sire), so i'm not interested in making money or churning out pups.

To say its irresponsible to have six dogs shows nievety IMO, how many people who dig week in week out through the season can manage with one terrier?

There is a no similarity whatsoever between a person who keeps a few dogs well worked and looked after somebody churning out pups for a fast buck.............. :wallbash:
