dam and sire, which is most important?

Recommended Posts

Your all going way too deep. The question he asked was regarding first crosses and does it matter which way round they are bred. It would be interesting to hear of someone who has bred both ways.

I've seen half collie/greys bred both ways and been out with them and couldn't see one bit of differance in working style , height was very similar as was build ,

An old saying, a kennel is only as strong as its bitches..

Another old saying, your stud dog is half your kennel.

Not heard that one in my book of old sayings..will take your word for it though

How many now would recognise the right or wrong dog that would best suit a bitch of the right standard, now its appearance that dictates most haphazard breeding, suitability and workmanship is often a poor second. The majority of breedings now have little thought for future development.

An old boy I once worked with bred Deerhound crosses back in the day, when they where 'the' dogs to knock over hares. He always said that the best of 'em came out of Deerhound dams to greyhound sires. He always said that finding good bitches was much harder than finding good dogs and good bitches should be cherished and bred from.

It's something thats always stuck with me and I've always admired a good bitch. Right now, I know I could not use all the digits of one hand to say how many good bitches I personally know of but I could at least double that with dogs.

I really can't answer the question of which is more important, I simply don't know but I know if I was to breed, the starting point must be a good bitch.

;)
