"Sporting" Dog Breeds; Becoming more popular as pets ?

Giving a pup to a pet home is nothing more than passing the buck, I like to take responsibility.

Vixen, I can see what your saying, but some of the stuff you've said is abit silly, wastage refers to the amount of pups out of a litter that don't come up to the working standard, they can't all be world beaters, and I think you'll find that some people do breed and keep back whole litters,

i do know what wastage means when said, but being a "snob" i think it's callous the way some people treat and talk about their dogs............i dont know anyone who has kept a whole litter of lurchers or terriers unless there has just been two or three pups  .........................at the end of the day i would rather give my pups to a pet home than a lot of the so called working homes on here............. :)

I can see what your saying vixen but not everyone is very sentimental, and just because you haven't heard of it happening, doesn't mean it doesn't, some lads will run on whole litters.

i have heard of and know people who have kept a litter of two or three pups but i've never heard of anyone keeping a litter of 4 - 12 pups their whole life

Well I haven't seen a terrier bitch had 12 pups? But yes although uncommon I do know some lads that hae kept whole litters,

Bound to ruffle some feathers but, I'd put a dog in a caring pet home before I'd let it go to some of the supposed good working homes that I know of.

we have a few none working lurchers/ greys near us .and most of their owners love em ,a couple have been picked up at rescue centres and some have been passed to them in one way or another . as most

pet dogs imo are beneficial for a kid.in fact i think every kid should have a dog.it teaches them to responsible towards something.also its probally the first time a child expierences bearevment in t

Totally agree, over the years it has become blatantly apparent to me the same people fail with pup after pup yet still call themselves genuine working dogmen/women.

Then some newbie with no experience takes a pup from the same mating and makes a job of it.

The real deal dogmans get out clause, I've got higher standards/expect more, my arse.

A ratio of mine, the fewer the dogs an owner goes through the better the dog owner they are.

I was sat in traffic the other week i noticed a lad walking along with what looked like an absolutely peak fitness dog i couldnt resist but call him over turned out it was a bull/whippet/grey......knowing the area like i do and knowing theres not much in the way of hunting i asked what he does with it where he takes it etc.......he says he,s got a treadmill on his balcony  and the dogs never been let off a lead because it runs away !!..............the knowledge the lad had on nutrition and conditioning was pretty good for a youngster......i asked why he keeps the dog so fit his answer was " to show my mates ".................

Seems to me working type dogs are on the fringes of becoming fashion items in exactly the same way most of these staffs are conditioned up to walk the streets and the same way the pit bulls became fashionable.......damn shame if you ask me.

At least he makes the effort to condition his dog.Half the so called working dog men ive met wouldnt know how to condition their hair.I would sooner let a pup go to a lad like that or a good pet home than half prats who leave their working dogs sat in shit filled kennels for days sometimes weeks and sometimes summers at a time.

There will always be wastage from litters born to working bitches. Anyone breeding a litter has probably had the difficulties of homing all the pups to working homes, and the next best option has got to be a caring pet home. Just a bit of a shock when their dear little pets start displaying their prey drive and start coursing the local wildlife across the dog walking areas.

Wastage???? i have never heard of such a word being used to describe pups in a litter, anyone who considers any pup wastage shouldn't be breeding, if you breed a litter of pups regardless of numbers then every single individual pup in that litter is your responsibility!! your responsibility to rehome in a responsible loving caring home where the pup wont be abused or flung out or passed around for all of its life, i would rather see a whole litter of lurcher pups in "pet" homes happy being cared for and loved than a very high percentage of the poor bloody dogs and pups advertised on here and passed from pillar to post

Calm down. Its a commonly used term to reffer to the pups in working bred litters that are not going to or don't make the grade.

you dont say??? this is exactly why the non working dog world look upon us all in the same light and tar us all with the same brush as a bunch of dumb ass morons that dont give a damn about our dogs .............this is also why the dog rescue centres are full of working type breeds

Well . . . . that's a bit of a quantum leap. The original post just said that every working bred litter would have wastage, i.e dogs that were not suitable for a working life, and so would be better suited to a pet home, although there be some problems when the dog shows some of its working breeding.

How does that show that we dont give a damn about our dogs?

The reason dog centres are full of working breeds is because they have become a fashion item and too many folk are breeding too many litters.

when breeding lurchers as you say vixen, say you breed 2 collie x's, surely some will throw to the collie, they will be no good for lurcher work and no good for collie work, so you gonna put them in rescue centres to have a life of misery, or sell it to someone who will potentially pass it around? with best will in the world you wont be able to guarantee pet homes will be good and permanent. what is the problem with painlessly putting the pup to sleep?

as i say this is speculation and guesswork on my part as i have never bred a litter, but surely it makes sense???

If you want to be seen by the public as callous towards dogs then that is your choice, i dont want to be classed the same as people writing on a public forum about pups or dogs being wastage and culling...............in the public eye do you think it comes across as a loving caring dog owner???...........i disagree with your last sentence, rescue centres are full of working dog breeds because of the idiots coming into the working side of dogs for 5mins , breeding , passing on, changing breed, breeding , passing on..............etc

so they throw to the collie there no good for lurcherwork?, what about ferreting?, longnetting?, general mooching?, a dog throwing to a collie is a better candidate for genuine lurcherwork than half the racy dogs out there which would be kept alive due to looks aloneI've seen heavily built dogs lamping hours after there racy counterparts are exhausted, it's a good man that can look at a young pup and predict it's capabilities as an adult.

Going with the amount of lurchers in rescues and failures in general your arguement doesn't hold water.

i dont know feck all about collie crosses just a bad example then. but what about bull x's, and you just breed a massive bull terrier as they both throw to it?? or a big useless beddy from 2 beddy based lurchers? and what if your breeding the 2 collie x's for lamping certain ground where you know a racy dog will only succeed, surely it is your choice what you do with the puppies if in your eyes you see them as wastage?? as far as im concerned as long as no harm is given to the pups and they are painlessly euthanized, what is wrong with putting all but 1 of the litter down?? surely better than putting a whole litter in a rescue home to idle away ???/

I actually do get where your coming from, but, one mans bog standard lurcher is anothers pride and joy. Also the chunky heavy pup at an early age doesn't always end up a heavy adult, in fact a well bred reared litter should look chunky regardless of how they're bred and you could possibly be destroying the best pups. Admittedly it's easier to euthanase a younger pup but me personaly I'd rear the lot, make my decision and find homes for the surplus. Also, if your dogs are good enough to be bred from you should have enough homes to go around regardless of physical shape. This however leads to the main reason of surplus pups, the owner might think the parents are the perfect specimens, but after they and a couple of friends make there choice there's usually a a fair few pups left regardless of shape.

There's pups advertised on this site as we speak, say ten in the litter, we have forty thousand members and the guys toiling to sell them. Wastage, as people call it isn't the problem, everyone thinking their dogs the perfect specimen and breeding from it is.
