If all's ok heath wise... Then wait until your youngster shows interest in something that could be of retrievable type, most pups are forever mouthing sommat and wind it up with it, in a play type way. When its keen and trying to get it, move to a area like a doorway, somewhere it has to go close to you to get past and throw it, only a few feet. It should go get it and at that point will either try to get past you or maybe move to another spot it likes. If its another place, move yourself to a position it will have to go close to you to get past. When it comes past, gently take it off it, with loads of praise and throw again, only a few feet and repete. Do not play too much tug of war!!

The key is for you to stop and take the item, placing it just out of reach and walk away, game over, for now. Always stop when the pup is mad keen and that way it'll be mad keen when you get the object next time. Again, a wind up first, then a few retrieves, quit when your winning!!

Remember... Retrieving MUST be fun, too much and a youngster gets bored and you've blown it...!!!

Best of luck Fay.

the thing about playing with an item is that it puts a dog in a position where its connecting with you, this may be a situation that is just too much for some sensitive dogs, it takes a dog out of its comfort zone particularly if it has been confronted for mouthing before,

its not the item thats important , its the interaction with you thats the clincher, play is only a way of getting the mutt's energy channeled towards you, its about the dog expressing canine behavior with you instead of acting on in some other form most of which will bring him into conflict with you,

the dog will pick up on the amount of energy you put into an activity, so be expressive and animated if its only a new dog it may take time for him to tune you in, it sounds like he's tuning you out when the connection gets too much and instinct kicks in,

build TRUST, if a dog trusts you it will let its energy flow without it collapsing into instinctive behavior, which is what happens when a dog play's for a certain period and then stops and starts chewing an item or just starts sniffing around ignoring you,

dont start teaching commands until you can get its energy to the fore, train the recall as the start of play that way it will stimulate drive in the dogs mind,

best of luck,
