Edge of the moors

Recommended Posts

Yesterdays trip was to a new bit of permission right on the ege of Dartmoor, this is a smallish farm with sheep and some cattle plus a few ponies.

I met Mick at 7 15 and followed him the 30 mins or so to the farm, We'd only just got out of the car when Bella my jrt started marking around some machinery she pushed herself underneath and out popped a rabbit  that Martha missed :icon_redface: at least we knew there was some here. It's the usual story on new permission your told theres loads there by the farmer but your never sure until your there.

We walked all of 40 yrds when the dogs marked on a thick hedge nets on 2 ferrets in and a quick 4 in the bag....... then the fun started.... I picked up my hob and we waited for Micks young Jill.... and we waited..... then she showed but we couldn't get within 3ft of her without her darting in.... Mick was getting more and mored Pissed off as time ticked on......... " F*ck it we'll leave her and come back later" he decided..... so we did.

We walked around the edge of this field and the dogs marked well on the bottom hedge, the field behind had 2 huge horses in, not sure if this was part of our permission and truth be known a little wary of the horses which were breathing down our necks we gave it miss and carried on our mooch.

Mick had brought his black terrier today and his bull x I had my normal 2 and as usual Bella was good with her marking, we walked along another thick hedge ( dont you love em) and halfway along the dogs marked again. we netted all the holes we could find and a few obvious runs + a stopnet at either end, ferrets in and banging starts a rabbit bolted and tried to make it accross the long grass field Martha was on it with Bela yapping behind, Marths picked it up well.... another bolted on Micks side then the ferrets showed and we moved on.... a mark on a small set produced 1 more and we decided to head back towards the "lost" ferret..... directly opposite the hedge she was in Micks terrier Marked a fairly big bury, it was to be another sting fest with nettles, brambles and holly....deep joy..... nets set and ferrets in it wasn't long before the rabbits started to bolt and we had 4 in the bag quickly.... we waited for the hob to show when I spotted him bolt a rabbit and chase it to the stop net at the end of the hedge where we started, I might put him to a whippet the way he ran the bunnie

5 out of the last bit to take us to a round dozen and we headed back to get the jill...... the locator showed she hadn't moved far so I sent 1 of my hobs in to move her out, it took a while and more frustration for Mick, I think my piss taking wasn't helping... eventually we had her.

The farmer came over at the and was pleased with our little haul ( as I reminded Mick it would've been more if we weren't making trying to coax his ferret out for half a day :tongue2::laugh: ), we've agreed a night out with the lamp for a look around and he said he'll sort the permission in the horse field ( not sure if this is good or bad :hmm:). Another good day out in stunning countryside............ there's a few pics but sorry no end of day shot, I might of mentioned we were looking for a ferret

Edited to add: Micky did redeem himself when he pulled out the sandwhiches whilst we were waiting venison, stilton and red currant jelly don't know where that concotion came from but they were bloody lovely

Nice haul, always 'interesting' doing them Devon hedges, always hard to stop them running the hedge we have found as you cant get a stop net through, but the poke nets are handy.

Nice Job Sirius

Know what you mean on that mate, we catch the majority in the run nets on the top, you just can't get at some of the holes to net them. Tend to use a long purse net ( 1 peg) and not pokes with 2 pegs, I did ask on here before about the D ring fronted nets and if people had used them.... Not tried them but could be useful...... We didn't miss any yesterday, more luck than judgement I reckon....

Cheers

I'll speak to you soon about a day, got a big hedge on a bit between the pair of us it's too thick at the minute, we'll have a look after a couple of frosts.....

That how I measure a good day too, not so much on the number caught but on the number missed

Ferreting those thick Devon hedges with the stone facing at the bottom can be good craic, to many people shy away from them, hit'em with a load of ferrets and the right nets and they can be productive ;)
