lukey 1,621
You have a PM Marshman And I would hazard a guess that half the men on here saying yeah go for it dont keep cross bred terriers Quote Link to post
marshman 7,758
@lukey. Yes you don't see many with mongrel terriers these days . Unless of course it's someone trying to earn cash by putting a shitzu or some such shite to a patterdale . Quote Link to post
ginga john 268
@Ginja John . So to confirm, you would put sid or that bitch to a jack russel or other breed . Like I said the theoretical dog or bitch would be superior to yours in graft , or would you wait for the right black dog? The point is that I don't have to take just any dog as I have the opportunity to travel, but if I was "back in the day" then it would be the best terrier I could find for working ability, the colour wouldn't matter If you look at history the working types of terrier never really started until the Edwardian times when vanity crept in and people wanted a type, before then there were two types dogs and bitches ! To answer the direct questions the Sid dog would shag a gatepost and if anyone wanted to use him the only stipulation would be that it must be a proven bitch As for the little SE bitch unless it does what it's supposed to then there won't be any point to the question  1 Quote Link to post
BIG G wheton machine 1,594
you could put the bst black to best black and all the litter could turn out tubes, one of the bst terriers ive seen was a border dog he as a belter and produced when put over blacks jrt and lakies. it just depends if the blood gels or not but breeding best to best ups the ods in your favour 1 Quote Link to post

Cleanspade 3,324
i bred a litter years ago from a lakie. cross russell a few years ago that held its own in a fine kennel of lakies. it was to hard but was kept untill it wasnt fit for work. it wasnt the best terrier in his kennel to look at although handsome enough. but i dont think it was bred off. the lad did however breed some fine coloured terriers very smart indeed. i think he missed the boat as do some others. but he would never have seen it even though it was in front of his eye's folk that keep good stuff have a fear of outcrossing/cross breeding.. some folk take the plunge and do alright. look at middletons foundation stock. i think purists produce more consistent but folk that take a chance can get something that little bit special. just my thoughts as ive seen some very good line bred stuff but the best ive seen is worker to worker. how can the best to best be bettered by the best i have to my mates best of the same type . all the best strains start by someone seeing potential in workers no matter the breeding. colour type. any other method has limits. best to best is just that.
