It was directed at a lot of people .....

As far as i am concerned this conversation is over ,All the dog shows are all but over so

LET THE HUNTING COMMENCE

Fair enough - I don't hold grudges and we both seem to want the same things - on that basis I think we can agree to disagree.

Have you any other suggestions for a young club (only a few short weeks) to potentially meet 30,000 people and get their name and cause known. If you do please let me know. Credit should be given wh

Ok i might of being a bit hard on neil . But being asked to pay 15 EURO into a game fair so you can pay 10 euro to the IWTF dosnt seem right Being asked to pay 15 EURO in to support a rise campaign

any help for the terrier cause is time well spent keep er lit lads

A T

I dont care how much you charge into your gamefairs ,and i dont realy care what you think of me either

and i dont blame you for wanting theIWTF and the rise campaign at your shows ,its all about numbers .

You know nothing about digging and less about me

The IWTF needs to stand on its own two feet and not be anybody elses lap dog to have any credability

JUST MY OPPINION ....again

JH,

Two very important points both the IWTF and RISE ASKED to be at our shows . WE DID NOT INVITE THEM although one of my colleagues is heavily involved in RISE and we were delighted to provide a platform for them.

Why did they want to be at our events - simple because they are the two largest countrysports events in Ireland and I presume they thought they would gain from being at them. Why would they not want to gain from our shows at no cost to themselves? Why would any sane country sports person object to them being at the two largest gatherings of country sports people in Ireland?

You say it is about numbers - of course it is for the IWTF, RISE and ourselves - again why would any sane country sports enthusiast want to object to demonstrations of the strength of the country sports community?

What do I know about you?

1. You appear to wish to attack me and our shows? And it appears you are prepared to attack virtually anyone or any organisation that supports them or is supported by them. One has to ask the question why?

2. You have attacked me, Neil, the IWTF and RISE from behind an alias? You are right that I don't know much about you but in my opinion anyone who can only issue widespread attacks on someone or something from behind an alias is a coward who hasn't the courage to voice his or her opinions openly. As such I consider your opinions are without merit or value because you don't believe strongly enough in them to put your own name behind them.

If one looks at your posts on our fairs one must ask why you should take such an interest in them and in attacking anyone who has an association with them?

Now since you claim I don't know you and you appear to know little about me - why would you attack me and our fairs?

I can think of only one reason - you are someone who does not like to see our fairs the success that they are! WHY?

hi albert why do you keep referring to birr and shanes as the two largest gathering of country sports people in the country when clearly they are not , there are other sports gatherings as big and some are bigger depending on the sport you are talking about, i cringe every time you say that, it is simply not true , you are not the only show in town , every county show have large gatherings of sporting people and events for profit just like you, and the point to point season as well where every hunt club run a race meeting or two, the G.A.A. also run games up and down the country in every parish, town and city in ireland attended by sporting people. oh almost forgot the coursing meetings run by the coursing clubs, all of these organisations are very successful in their own right and attended by large crowds of sporting irish people. you never seem to miss an opportunity to sell and promote the two game fairs, every little hunt club have their own team of people who run terrier and lurcher shows all over this country successfully and with good prizes. I would guess that you need the lurchers and the terriers and the whippet and the dog racing as an attraction for to get the crowds in, and expect the exhibitor or in this case dog owner, to pay 15euro, when i attend an agricultural show with a horse the gate is free to me, if i attend a point to point with a entered horse the gate is free to me, if i attend the game fair with my lurcher i pay 15euro. JimJIm,

Of course I/we use every opportunity to promote our events - as does every other organiser. That is what good marketing is all about - and that is why we deliver the two largest country sports events in Ireland year after year for over 34 years. Our team are all marketing/promotions focused and we all work hard to get the message out whenever and wherever we can. The sporting organisations recognise that we do a great job in promoting and defending country sports and that we provide a great platform for them to meet their members and make new ones and so do the animal rights people who would love to be able to organise public events of the size and status of our events. That is nothing that any self respecting country sports enthusiast should cringe about!

We do not claim we have the largest sports gatherings - certainly GAA matches can attract larger audiences - but we do organise the largest country sports gatherings in Ireland - FACT.

Of course lots of people run sporting events and I applaud each and every one of them because I know how hard it is to run events properly with increasing legislation, real economic hardship and dire weather.

we do not use the lurchers & terriers as an attraction but because we think they should be an integral part of the country sports community and should be treated as such. Are they a major public attraction - NO .

Look at the number of members of the public at Birr watching the gundogs and even the clay shooting compared to watching the terriers & lurchers and you will see how attractive they are to the general public. In fact some event organisers think they are actually offputting to the public and thats why they put them outside of the show. I can assure you in our research with the public terriers & lurchers as an attraction are very far down the list of why the public attend our events!

When we actually tot up what it costs to put on the terriers and lurchers in terms of share of ground rental, share of promotional costs , judges expenses and prizes - they actually contribute very little if anything to overall profits ( if any) bearing in mind we pay all of the expenses and the organising club take the entry fees.

Ask any event organiser this year including the Scottish fair, CLA Fair , Great Yorkshire Show etc how much they risk by organising a show and how much they can lose. Survival was the name of the game in 2012!

AND fact - we were the first to run major terrier and lurcher shows - in 1980 - and over the years and we will continue running them and promoting them as an integral part of country sports and our game fairs. AND we will continue to promote and advertise our events in the manner that we deem appropriate and the manner in which has won us several marketing and tourism awards.

no albert you do not organise the largest gathering if irish sports people , you cannot in fairness say that , yes the events are large and on par with some, surely the tullamore show would be the largest in ireland , the killag and the tinahealy are on par or larger. stop twisting my words i said i cringe when you use the word largest when it clearly is not. yes albert you do a great job well done. but well done to the many other larger and as big as shows too like tullamore and tinahealy. as for the costs the game fairs in england and wales which i have attended charge £15 on the gate and every class you enter is free after that, you can enter as many dogs and as many class as you like for free. as for lurcher and terriers not being a public attraction i lost my voice explaining how my lurcher was crossed at borris show to the general public the dog was a real chick magnet so much so my friend wanted to lead him around for a while, may not be the biggest attraction but an attraction none the less.

JImJIm,

Tullamore and Tinahealy are not country sports shows they are country shows based primarily on agriculture. I did not say we run the largest sporting shows but the largest country sports ones. I don't think many would describe Tullamore or Tinahealy as either sporting or country sports event. I repeat the fact that we organise the largest country sports events in Ireland.

I don't know what game fairs you go to in England with free classes but as far as I am aware Scone, CLA and Midland cost more and do NOT have free classes except for pre qualified classes - which is similar to ourselves. As any one not pre entered or qualified at our show pay the same admission fee ( except for terriers & lurchers I offer a special pre paid two day ticket) what they do when they enter the fair is up to them - they can enter the clay pigeon shooting, the fly casting, archery, or the terriers & lurchers with the club organising the event taking all entry fees. It is your choice what you do when you come into the fair.

You mention Borris - I understand that you did not have to go into the fair to enter your dog in the terrier & lurcher event - was entry to the classes free? Did the prizes compare to Birr? If you went into the fair at Borris - was that free? So if you went to Borris entered your dog in some classes and then paid entry into the fair - was it really much different to going to Birr except Birr was much larger, had better prizes, ringside parking for terrier and lurcher inside the fair and a bit less mud!

I am pleased that there was so much public interest in your dog at borris - it shows that since we staged the first major terrier & lurcher show at Clandeboye in 1980 and other events every year for 34 years over 51 fairs people are more interested in terriers & lurchers BUT would they pay €15 specfically to come to see them - or that they be one of the reasons the public come to the show - I don't only think not - I know so because every person or family gets a questionnaire to fill in and T&L while of interest to you and me don't figure in the top 10 reasons for attending the show! However it is good that the public don't feel threatened by lurchers and terriers and are gradually getting an understanding of them and people like you walking them round fairs and discussing them does help create a good image. That's why I felt the IWTF at the fairs was both good for them, and good for the defence of working dogs.

I feel that it is very important to have terriers & lurchers at our events and to involve them in our PR, press conferences and promotions - really the only major show in Ireland to do so. Because it enables the public who attend our shows to see them in a neutral setting and in a lot of ways overcomes the negative images generated by our opponents.

albert of course the agricultural shows are country events stop mincing words, the agricultural shows run dog shows, cattle shows, horse showing, gymkanaghs, all competitive, they also have trade stands and attractions like yourself, all country sports and attractions. the welsh game fair is only £10 on the gate and you dont have to qualify your dog to enter the show ring and it is free, the midlands show also you pay on the gate and open dog show is free, lots of irish go over to these shows to. fox hound people are big into country sport as well(would not do like to bring the pack down oconnell street to find a fox) Borris made provision for the hounds with show classes, was great attraction to, could do with this sector of people to fight our cause, they also ran a hunters chase class another great attraction. so albert there are many country sports events as large and god forbid even larger than yours. have to go now, need to get to town to find a tux for my graduation its next friday. have a nice week end Edited by jimjim

jimjim,

I see you do not distinguish between a COUNTRY/AGRICULTURAL SHOW and a SPECIALIST COUNTRY SPORTS EVENT. They are two different things. I have never stated that we organise the largest COUNTRY EVENT but I do state quite categorically that we organise the TWO LARGEST COUNTRY SPORTS EVENTS in Ireland. And I think if you ask the main country sports organisations - they would agree with me and not you - look at their web sites!

We have had proper hound shows at our events on several occasions rather than just some hound classes. We don't have hunt team chases because of the problems with horses and horse boxes on potentially soft ground.

I am amazed if you are asserting that Borris was one of the ' there are many country sports events as large and god forbid even larger than yours'. It certainly was NOT!

As I have said I applaud the efforts of all rural event organisers especially if their events are well organised and reflect well on the rural community and its interests.

But I challenge you to name one COUNTRY SPORTS event NOT COUNTRY event that is larger than Shanes or Birr.

Albert

Best of luck with your graduation!

Were you at the Game Fair in Borris Albert or do you only attend shows that you have a financial interest in ? I attend Birr every year and always enjoy it but I also attend other shows that are equally as good! I am sick to death of you continually blowing your own trumpet and knocking other shows! By the way the lurcher and terrier show in Borris was far better attended with many more dogs than Birr this year ! All the best Garret

On behalf of the I.W.T.F. may I give a big thank you to the organisers of The Irish Game & Country Fair held at Birr yesterday.

Once again it was a great day with several more members joining.

For the IWTF to be able to be on such a big stage in it's first year is little short of remarkable and goes a long way in showing who does indeed support us and our terriers.

right lads this thread was started about i.w.t.f in birr if ye want to bitch about who organise the biggest show do so in pm or on another thread ffs ye just ruined this thread that the i.wt.f wanted to inform the organisers of the show held in birr there appreciation with a big thank you !!!! this thread is about the terrier not who ruin the biggest show ,

one larger event , clonmel is a large irish country sporting event. where the real master mcgrath used to run. albert the agricultural shows are large country sporting events too, look at the amount of classes, any competition is sport in my book, when they involve country persuit's they are both country and sporting. i didnt say borris was bigger or smaller but it was large and yes there was plenty of mud but us hunting people are used to it., i suppose we better stop our debate for fear of upsetting other people on here. finally i do enjoy the game fairs and any of the many irish country sporting events. yours in sport jimjim ps got the tux all set now , and thank you for your good wishes. The Burren Charity Working Dog Show and Raceday Saturday 26th July 25   From the Pen of Margaret Mc Stay   As the clock on the wall jingled out its usual dulcet tones on Saturday morning, it signalled the start of a new day for us and another great sporting event on our country sports calendar. With Mrs Sat Nav being our guiding light along the way, and the beautiful Mourne Mountains following us enroute, very soon The Burren came into view and the dog show venue for the day. And what a venue that was. It was evident the amount of hard work the Burren Team had put into this show ground. It was in tiptop condition with six toilets on site, rings well spaced out and a superb racetrack with a very steep hill. And what a tester for our dogs this track was. With the sun shining down all day in abundance and a very large gathering of canine folk from North and South of the border, the atmosphere was electric. I can honestly say this was the biggest show I have been at this year and all for a great charity. As the day progressed I took a stroll around the many stands dotted around the field. I stopped of at Mick Mc Cormacks stand. Mick and Lorna are always so welcoming and have a stand full of everything for the hunting fraternity. Next door was flight & bite Outdoor Clothing & Footwear. I had a great we chat with owner Richard Caddell. Richard and I go back a very long time from our times at The Great Games Fairs of Ireland at Shanes Castle. I think most of our outdoor gear for dog shows were bought of this man over the years. You would not go hungry at this show. Burgers/Drinks/ Snacks/Teas and coffee were all available on site. The children had a field day with a child handling class. Every child got a medal and a bag full of goodies. With their barking and crooning canine friends by their sides, these little people were in their happy place and full of winning spirit As the day progressed into evening, it was raffle time and then the excitement began. It is unbelievable the buzz of excitement the raffle generates to the people around the ring. There were some great items in the raffle, and some very happy campers going home with great prizes The Racing started at approximately 12 noon followed by Showing. Here are the Racing and Showing Results: ***Racing Results*** Pups Kieran with Jimmy Kirsty with Sika Whippet James Mullen with Junior James Mullen with Toby Under 21s Lynzi Gardiner Magill with Bill Rose Mc Coy with Arlo Under 22s Lynzi Gardiner Magill with Venus Rose Mc Coy with Texas Under 23 elite Lynzi Gardiner Magill with Lady Lynzi Gardiner Magill with Cody Under 23s traditional lurcher Mj with Lila Under 24 smooth Lynzi Gardiner Magill with Jack Rose Mc Coy with Prada Under 24 hairy Harry Roche with Sula Joyce Scott with Susan Master McGrath Jake with Storm Joyce Scott with Guss Mick the Miller Jed Donagh with Chaz Lynzi Gardiner Magill with Sugar Light bull Yapper Hayes with Lady Leigh Thompson with Roxy Heavy bull Joyce Scott with Mable Leigh Thompson with King Terrier Matthew Wisdom with Rocco Elaine with Ruby Greyhounds Barry Holland with Hunter ***Showing Results*** Overall Champion Pup Clodagh Gentle with Dash Overall Champion Whippet James Mullen with Toby Overall Champion Lurcher Shane Burns with Buster Overall Champion Terrier Marty Mc Donald with Rebel Overall Champion Strong Dog Chris Mc Court with Sandy Overall Champion Hound Iveaghs Grapevine Overall Champion and Best in Show Marty Mc Donald with Rebel Overall Champion Reserve Chris Mc Court with Sandy Congratulations to all above winners and well done. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges on the day, for doing a wonderful job.The Judging was delivered with accuracy and integrity, and a job was well done by all. A special word of thanks to these legends in the Doggie world yes The Mc Grath Dog Racing Club Carlow. Again this year Biddy, you and the boys, and you as a team excelled yourselves in everything you done on the day for the Burren Working Dog Charity Show and Club and many thanks for that. You have been so helpful to so many clubs North and South of the border over the years and long may it last. Finally, Finally this top show would not of been possible without this now well experienced and brilliant show organiser. Yes, I would like to thank the coordinator of this spectacular charity event Stephen Mc Nally and his family, Dad Louis, mother Margaret, brothers Martin and Noel, sister Theresa, Philip Mackin, and a most willing, helpful and friendly back up team and helpers for another top charity show and race day. A light went out in the Mc Nally household, when Stephen and his family lost a son and a beloved brother to cancer. This is total heart break for any family, but Stephens reason and inspiration behind the Burren Charity Working Dog Shows is to keep the memory of his brother alive through giving back to the charities, through his dog shows to the people who helped the family in their hour of need. This years chosen charity “Daisy Lodge Cancer Fund For Children “ is a charity that makes a real difference in the lives of families affected by cancer. Their mission is to empower and connect families, giving them the support they need to cope with the emotional and practical challenges of a cancer diagnosis. They also stand beside bereaved families, offering care and guidance to those grieving the loss of a child or parent. This is where your gate, racing, ring and raffle contribution to The Burren Charity Working Dog Show will go to, and what a very worthy cause. For that we truly thank you for your contribution. Thanks to Stephen and the Burren Team for a most enjoyable day, for the kindness you have shown to John and myself on the day. A brilliant venue and a brilliant day full of lovely memories, and I am already looking forward to more of the same god willing in 2026. To we meet again God Bless. Margaret Mc Stay

The Keep er Lit Dog Show and Raceday Sunday 20th July 2025
Doagh Equestrian is situated on the beautiful Antrim coast in the village of Doagh, Co Antrim. This was a new venue for the “Keep er Lit” Dog show and Race day and the ideal spot for   last Sundays Show.
From early morning, cars and trailers arrived from North and South of the border. Some people came as far away as Limerick and Drogheda with families and dogs in tow. Our good canine folk love a good dog show in the summer and a chat with like minded people. They certainly were not disappointed at the Keep er Lit show.
As the show progressed, so did the banter and the craic. The rings were well spaced out with a good long race track. Paul Boyd was there with his country sports stand, with everything needed in the hunting fraternity.
Some very tasty burgers were available on site and an Equestrian shop with great discounts on offer on the day. I had to take control of my retail therapy when I got into that shop, as I was like a child in a toy shop with to much to choose from.
The weather was glorious all day and at times to warm. As usual the raffle generated a great buzz around the field with some great prizes on offer.
The show started with the racing first at approximately 12.30
Here are the Racing and Showing Results

Strong Dog Judge : Gareth Barnett
      Lurcher Judge       : Gerard Melaugh
      Whippet Judge      : Colin Maguire
      Terrier Judge         : Martin Breen
      Pets Judge             : Gail Ross
Judging is not an easy job, but you were consistent and fair, and very successful with the end product.
The racing was carried out as usual to perfection by The Mc Grath Racing Club Carlow. These people have many years experience in the Canine world both in showing and racing and their input helps to alleviate the pressure on the show organizer on the day. A job well done Biddy and team.
Some lovely photographs were taken on the day by various people, and no doubt these will be up on the site shortly.
And Finally, Finally, they say behind every good man is a good woman and Leigh Thompson along with Paddy Gibson, you both definitely fitted into that category. Your show was run with impeccable organisation. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work and sleepless nights was put into  this now annual Show. Leigh and Paddy you pulled out all the stops on the day and produced a top class show in a top class venue. Well done and a credit to you both.
I am Looking forward to more of the same in 2026. Thank you for the memories. To we meet again God Bless.
