That's good to hear Albert.

I know very well I wasn't the only one who was busy. Every where I looked there was someone flat out making sure things went smoothly.

I looked over a couple of times at the lurcher ring and could see that the lurcher judge really did have his hands full.

I'm sure the whippet judge had the same difficult job.

They are two gents I had a good chat with afterwards and believe me we all had a great day.

Just a quick thank you to the Roscrea lads and lasses. They really did make sure things ran smoothly and are great bunch of folk.

They have a club there that really would be the envy of anyone.

Thanks again,

Neil.

Neil,

Yes this was the first time the Roscrea Club had organised both show and racing ( last year they just organised the racing) and they rose magnificently to the challenge of working a completely new race track when the sileage contractor decided to take heavy machinery down the lurcher track that they & we had spent time preparing for last year and then swinging into action for a second day to run what I hear was a very big show. Yes my own team and the estate team helped out cutting and rolling race track and rings and posting rings but the club have a great and enthusiastic membership and shouldered the rest of the work. Great to see from the chairman down to the kids turned out in their smart club shirts - yes a great example of how a club should be run with enthusiasm and commitment.they have our full confidence for 2013.

just hunt - I don't speak for the IWTF or Albert's gang but here's my opinion on your opinion ;)

But being asked to pay 15 EURO into a game fair so you can pay 10 euro to the IWTF dosnt seem right

The whole idea of going to the game fairs was surely to make it easy for people to join - but you're totally against that concept. What else can the IWTF do? Call to every potential member's house and hold their hand while they sign up?

It's handy having these organizations at the one event - On Sunday I renewed my WDAOI membership and also paid a few euro I owed to the NARGC.

I wonder how many people went to Birr JUST to join the IWTF? Seriously PM me if anyone did - I have no access to the names taken at the IWTF stand on the day but will ask whoever does if your name appears there - then I will know you're genuine. That will be the total Albert and co 'made' from supporting the IWTF

I agree the IWTF is a young org and is feeling its way a bit ,BUT i too was in the

Horse andJocky that day and felt the passion and was realy excited about the whole thing

The IWTF's job is to be a voice for terrier work - they're not here to entertain you. It's a boring job but - as we nearly found out the hard way - someone has to do it because no one was.

The IWTF needs to make it alot easier to join maybe a rep in each county or something similiar .

You seem to be familiar with the IWTF site so you've seen the page with the membership forms -

Members

What part of the process are you having difficulty with? I'm not being a smart ass here - I genuinely want to know. All that stuff costs a lot of money - PO Box, Cards, web site etc. - if something's not working then let them know.

also i think the front page of any web site should be for Latest News .To tell the members whats happening

That's what's on it! It wasn't only the game fairs that were attended by the IWTF but also a few smaller shows earlier in the summer - they were also publicized on the site. Have you an issue with them as well?

A big problem with a fledgeling organization like the IWTF is that no one knows about it or what it stands for. These days a website can solve that easily. Again it's not solely aimed at it's members but at furthering the cause.

Coveney gets something across his desk referencing the IWTF - first question he'll have is 'who the f**k are they' - maybe not in those words ;) Quick search and he's on our site - he sees that we have ties with other organizations so maybe we're not a bunch of thugs in wife beater t-shirts - like the anti's portray us. So maybe he could do business with us. Do you get my point?

"Just Hunt" can have an opinion like anyone else.

There will be many voices in the IWTF, some like terrier shows and other people will think they are useless regarding working terriers.

I would thank the Organisers of the Birr show for giving the IWTF the chance to reach a wider audience.

They were generous with space, time and tickets to help our cause.

It is one BRANCH of the overall strategy that an ACTIVE federation must take.

But I can also understand "Just Hunt's" frustration at the lack of support from the wider hunting community (NARGC,FACE,HAI etc..) behind the scene.

I think that it's fairly clear in this thread that he wants the IWTF to go it alone?

I would be one for standing on my own ywo feet ,but then again
The IWTF needs to stand on its own two feet and not be anybody elses lap dog to have any credability

Having a go at an organization who openly supports the IWTF is hardly a great way of expressing his "frustration at the lack of support" as you put it.

Having a go at an organization who openly supports the IWTF is hardly a great way of expressing his "frustration at the lack of support" as you put it.

Frustration usually happens when there is a lack of communication.

If there is more information available regarding

1, Progress of affiliation with these Hunting organizations.

2, Progress of the Animal Health Welfare Bill 2012.

3, Progress and updates of any Committee Meetings. How many?

4, Numbers of Clubs and members signed up.

5, etc...etc...

A News update on the IWTF site or a WEBTEXT to members could only help.

A man can have an opinion.

I do not wish to carry on this conversation any further on THL. IWTF business should happen elsewhere.

P3D,

Two good inputs from you and Corkonian. As you can see from posts I didn't mind JH having his opinion of me and my colleagues but his attacks on the IWTF in abusive language were unwarranted.

When any new organisation is formed , especially on the basis of enthusiasm, people tend to want to see immediate results but I am sure you can appreciate that more basic things such as building up strength, meeting relevant cognate organisations, establishing credilibility with the other country sports organisations and setting objectives and strategies have to be dealt with. Going off 'half cocked' on 'solo runs' is the last thing the IWTF needs to be doing. The federation should be in 'for the long haul' and that takes time.

I can appreciate that members want information but of the points you put I think many of them must of necessity be confidential to the committee as probably progress is ongoing. i.e

1, Progress of affiliation with these Hunting organizations.

2, Progress of the Animal Health Welfare Bill 2012.

Both of these are sensitive and will be subject to negotiations - I suspect the former can only really take place when the IWTF is longer established and the latter I know is being dealt with by people whose ability and integrity I trust and are very experienced in political negotiation.

4. Numbers of Clubs and members signed up - Again this sort of information should possibly be reported to the members at a general meeting or be available to members through a secure area of the site.

3, Progress and updates of any Committee Meetings. How many? In my opinion this information should be available to members.

I am not a member of the IWTF but I do wish to see it succeed - not out of any self interest ( as implied by JH) but because I think it will be good for working dog owners and countrysports as a whole.

I make the suggestions from a background of having been chairman of many clubs and organisations and my advice would be to people who feel frustrated is to give the committee your support and confidence for a year to make progress on all of these fronts and to then bring their report to an AGM for your approval or otherwise.

When somebody knows nothing about something they would be better off

saying fxxk all

That seems the sort of advice you should take yourself.

When did you last form a campaigning organisation, chair a major club or organisation, organise any major event, lobby politicians, lobby sporting organisations, work with major sporting organisations on legislation in lobbying/PR etc, organise demonstrations etc? Let us hear your experience/success in any of these areas? Otherwise I think you should take your own advice!

Hi Albert,

I do not get in any conflict on any forum, but just to put you in the picture. A few year ago when the RISE campaign started just hunt campaigned very hard for the future of hunting. The ward union, the puppy farming bill, he went to Dail Eireann on a few occasions to lobby T.Ds, and lobbied his local T.Ds aswell. Went to the RISE rallys in Waterford, which was the biggest RISE rally ever, he went to the one in Trim, and also the one in Cashel. When this was all happening, and people said it was not going to happen to them because they had not got 6 bitches in their kennell, and hunting with hounds had nothing to do with them either. Now people are getting principles when they think it is going to affect them, it is a pity they were not like just hunt, and a minority of people 2 years ago, we might be in a far better position now.

I do not want to carry this discussion on any further, but the fight for our country sports must go on.

Thanks for the information - if you look over the posts between JH and myself at no time did I offer any personal abuse to him or about him - unlike the reverse. Also unlike JH I do not take a short term perspective on defending countrysports but have been promoting country sports and defending them for nearly 40 years personally, facilitating the sporting organisations at or fairs, through our fairs, our magazines, our and my personal sponsorship and donations to events and organisations and lobbying MPs and MLAs. And I still retain my enthusiasm for helping where I can in the battles to retain all of our sports.

When the Animal Rights movements started in earnest in NI - we were attacked on the PR front by the ARM and I was singled out for a persistent and violent campaign by the ALF. Our fairs were attacked, there were protests outside the fairs and even an aircraft with banner buzzing the fair for two days, my cars were attacked,we had threatening 'phone calls to the house every night through the night for over 6 months, my house was attacked several times, my family was threatened by name, letters were written to all of my neighbours, and I was personally attacked by about a dozen outside my house. Further four of the ALF posed masked with cross bows and 'semtex' for the Sunday World and made a death threat publicly. If JH does not realise the contribution we have made to the defence of field sports the antis certainly did!

Of course I fought back - including routing my attackers with a baseball bat, 'capturing' four of them damaging our posters and holding them until the police arrested them on a 'conduct

liable to lead to a breach of the peace' charge. They got off because they said that they had locked themselves in their car fearing violence from just two of us - which might just possibly have been true! And most importantly taking the Northern Office to Court for the criminal damage to my car and having the ALF activity come under the anti terrorist laws- this making the ALF a proscribed organisation in NI - and easier for victims of their terror tactics to get compensation. .Finally by identifying the ring leaders and making them personally responsible for my family's safety. It was a moral victory when the ARM issued a statement saying they were giving up protesting at our fairs because they had been unable to convince the public against them.

In my opinion the biggest threat to country sports comes from within and people attacking fellow country sports people with all the the bitterness that that engenders. It sounds as if JH and I would have more in common than he perhaps thinks and I would certainly like to know what I have done to offend him to have stimulated his campaign of criticism on this forum.

It is going to be a long term and ongoing battle for our sports with very few short term victories. I certainly am in for the 'long haul'.

The Mc Grath  Racing Club Dog Show and Race Day, Sunday 31st August 25
**(Representing Mr Aj Titterington of The 5 Nations  and The Great Game Fairs of Ireland)**
It has been said Carlow is one of the oldest counties in Ireland. Within this beautiful County traditionally rural and near the M9 motorway lies the village of Ballinabrannagh. This was the venue for The Mc Grath Racing Club Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 31stTH August 25.
As it was 5 Nations day,Ballinabrannagh was buzzing with excitement. It was here in the late summer weather sporting enthusiasts from north and south of the border came to view the challenges of the sporting elite, and to partake in the Country sports events listed on the day.
As we approached the venue, it was very evident the popularity of this now annual show and the footfall far bigger than last year, all parking places were  filling up fast. On entering the field, I met so many patrons who I would have met at the Great Game Fairs of Ireland  in Shanes Castle. At this point  the memories came flooding back and what happy memories they were, probably never to return. The weather was very windy all day with some heavy showers in between.
The show rings were well spaced out and the racetrack was in immaculate condition despite the heavy rain during the week.
The entire McGrath family was out in strength on Sunday. I would guess all 15 children of the household and all helping out in every way they could.
It was nice to see all our little boys and girls in the childrens handling class showing off their faithful Canine breeds. We must not forget that these little people are our Country Sportsmen and women and show organisers of to morrow.
Ged Donagh paid a lovely tribute to  5 young sports girls and boys that have attended and showed their dogs at our shows in the summer months in 2025 and previous. These 5 young people  are now our  Young Sports Personalities of the year. They are Clodagh Gentle/Ian McGrath /Ivy Roche/Charlie Mc Caughey and TJ Duggan. Each young person in the group received a nice trophy sponsored by Ged himself for all their hard work in the ring. Ged does this now annually. What a lovely thought and accolade to these Young Sports People.
Next on the schedule was the Ross Rice racing cup in memory of Ross who passed away after an accident a few years ago. It was lovely to see all Rosses mates there to support and honour and keep the memory of their treasured friend alive. There were cheers all around the field when Jaimie O Connors winning dog romped home to victory for the 2nd time around. He was last years winner also. Many thanks to Ged Donagh for keeping this young mans memory alive through this race and sponsoring this event.
Time passes so quickly, very soon it was Race and Show time.

And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Mc Grath Family for another brilliant show and race day on Sunday. The saying is that behind every good man is a good woman and Biddy Mc Grath you definately fit that picture. Biddy, we would have been lost without you. Along with Michael and Jack, you put a lot of hard work in behind the scenes to make this day most enjoyable for everyone.
Your whole family was so welcoming, and made us all feel at ease in your native Co Carlow. Thank you so much for the lovely presentation to us on Sunday, it was so unexpected and very much appreciated.
As the end of the day was approaching, it was time to say good bye to Balinabrannagh for another year and be on the road again to Co Armagh and the place we call home.
Many thanks Mc Grath Racing Club for the memories, and God willing, we will all be back again in 2026 for another great window in Country Sports.
To we meet again God Bless.

THE GLENSHANE WORKING DOG CHARITY SHOW AND RACEDAY SUNDAY 24th AUGUST 25 ( In Aid of The Fort Centre RDA Maghera )
Maghera is a small town at the foot of the Glenshane Pass and lends itself to some of the North coasts most beautiful panoramic views. Situated 2 miles outside Maghera is Tobermore Golf Club. This was the venue for The Glenshane Charity Working Dog Show and Raceday Sunday 24th August 25. And what a day and venue that was.
Safe to say this was one of the best venues I have been to this year.  The grass was immaculately cut, rings well spaced out and a well groomed race course.
As this show was run for a very special charity, the gods were on our side as the sun shone in abundance all day. As the morning progressed into noon, cars and trailers with dogs in tow filled the field to capacity. The craic and the banter was in full swing amongst the huntsmen and women on the day. Our good Canine folk had only one thing in mind. Out for a great Sporting day  in Glenshane before the work in the field begins.
The wee people were there enjoying the day in the play trailer, bouncing around to their hearts delight. Some very tired children on Sunday night. Paul Boyd was there with his Country Sports stand, as was the hot food, tea and coffee van.
Time passes so quickly and very soon it was show time.

The Racing was run and organised by the McGrath Lurcher Racing Club.  Teamwork is the success of this club and as usual everything went like clockwork. Michael/Jack and Biddy your efficiency and dedication as usual is beyond reproach and thank you for that.
And Finally, Finally on this occasion it is very hard to put into words what the show organisers Joanne and Paul Owens have come through over these last 11 years and it still continues today.
Cathan, their son was born with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia and was only diagnosed when he was 6 weeks old and had surgery at 6.5 weeks At the age of 7 years Cathan received his gift of life from Birmingham Childrens hospital, with a liver transplant and is 4 years post liver transplant on 23rd August.
It would take a tear from a stone listing to these parents briefly telling me the heartache and trauma they came through to try to keep Cathan alive and to get him to where he is to day.
All proceeds from this charity dog show will go to Fort Centre RDA Maghera. This show is also a celebration of Cathans life and how far and the progress he has made in his young life so far.
Joanne/Paul/Cliona/Tiarna/Sharon/Nicola and your back up team, your show was well organised and a credit to all good sporting shows and a great window for our Country Sports. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work went on behind the scenes to make this show so enjoyable for everybody. This show is now an annual event and for a very special reason close to Paul and Joannes heart.
** Just a wee foot note. As many of you know Cathan had a we set back on Sunday at the show resulting in him being hospitalised. The good news is he is out of hospital and making good  progress and will be back to full health and of to school very soon.**
Glenshane Team, Thank you for Sunday. To we meet again take care and God Bless

The Tally Ho Working Dog Show Saturday 16th August 2025
As I looked out the window early Saturday morning the sun was just breaking through the trees, with a small welcoming breeze filtering over the dog pens. Barking out at us was the usual Whippet chorus signalling the day had arrived for the Tally Ho Working Dog Show and Raceday at Nutts Corner. And what a show that was.
I firmly believe nature plays a big part in telling our faithful Canine friends the end of the showing season is on the horizon, and their weekly excursions to the show ring and race track is coming to an end.
We arrived in the field around 10.00am and were greeted by the show organiser Peter Morgan who had reserved a parking place for us right beside the whippet ring. What a thoughtful man with a heart full of kindness.
By noon time the field was filling up with dogs and families all out for a good days racing and showing. The venue was superb, with rings were well spaced out and the racetrack in immaculate condition, and all put up and hammered in by Peter Morgan himself. Four toilets were well situated around the site and plenty of ringside parking was provided.
Paul Boyd as was Marty Black there with all the hunting gear, collars etc you could wish for the coming season.A great variety for our Country Sports fraternity. A burger van was in full swing with some delicious burgers and chips and was not long to the smell of good hot food was wafting its appetizing smells all over the place.
I can honestly say it was a childrens paradise at the Tally Ho Show on Saturday. The laughter and enjoyment coming from the bouncy castle was unreal. When it came to the childrens handling class, there were 43 children in the ring. The winners got a beautiful trophy and rosette and each child in the ring got a medal and a big bag of goodies.
Very soon it was Raffle time and boy was there some variety of prizes on that table. I never have seen such an array of prizes in a raffle at any show this year.  The raffle generated so much excitement and fun around the field as it progressed. Many happy punters went home with some lovely prizes.
Time waits for no one and very soon it was Racing and Showing time. Here are the Results.

Judging is not an easy job, but the judges were all consistent and fair
A Big thank you to the Racing team Matt Lee/Joanna Relf Lee and Matthew Lee for running the racing on the day so efficiently. Your experience and input is invaluable and of this we are extremely grateful.
There were 3 very willing young people helping Peter out on Saturday. Conor Creagh/Callum Jones and Kerry Ann Hughes you all done a great job and everything ran like clockwork.
As usual it was evident a lot of hard work and sleepless nights was put into organising this top show and all Peters shows in the past to make them so successful, and all along the way Peter has done this single handed.
And Finally, Finally it is with a heavy heart I am writing this and hoping it will not come to fruition.  Peter has said to me this is the last show he will run. But  with hope in my heart I am hoping he might change his mind.
Peter you have given 20K plus to charity over the years, encouraged our young country men and women to carry on the tradition in the ring and in the field, and given Country Sports a great window through your shows over the years. I have known you now through country sports for over 20-25 years and probably longer, and all through that time you have never faltered away from the Canine world.
The prizes, the cups, the childrens handling class and bouncy castles at your shows are second to none. The time and money you put into your shows for our enjoyment is a credit to you.
I will conclude for now Peter hoping at some time down the road, maybe you will change your mind and have another show in 2026. It was nice to be your friend through the ups and downs in the Country Sports world.
God Bless to we meet again.
       Margaret Mc Stay
