Hi Neil I personally think the Terrier man is in a catch22 situation when it comes to supporting RISE,i would support any fieldsport yet they dont support mine. There was a big turnout of Terrier me

Neil,

Des has been and is a great defender of all countrysports - he is a real 'terrier' when he gets his teeth into anything that threatens country sports.

We were honoured to give him our Brownlow award for the person who in the opinion of the editorial team of the magazine had done most for country sports in Ireland in the last year. We thought his work on taking on and defeating the government on the firearms issue warranted this alone but there was whole mass of other work that supported this.

I spoke to Des only once on the phone and know I was speaking to a knowledgable country and fieldsports man.

The reputation and acheivements of the NARGC and Des Croften is quiet well known and worthy to represent any or all fieldsports issues.

It's going to be a great day for fieldsports.

RISE and we have agreed another press release issued to all of the media in both Ireland and the Uk by Paul Pringle ( Editor of our magazine) and the RISE Press Officer. It is a challenge to the media to compare our crowds with the ARAN rally and also a CHALLENGE to our people to come out.

Release reads as follows:

"BIRR FAIR ORGANISER CONFIDENT OF DEMONSTRATING THAT THE MAJORITY OF IRISH PEOPLE SUPPORT REAL RURAL CONSERVATION RATHER THAN EMOTIVE APPEALS ON ANIMAL RIGHTS ISSUES.

While Ireland’s biggest Game Fair at Birr, Co Offaly on 25th and 26th August is set to attract many tens of thousands of country sports supporters and their families, including supporters of Rural Ireland Says Enough ( RISE) , it appears that so called animal rights issues will be raised in Dublin on 26th by the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN).

Commenting on the fact that two sets of supporters will be engaged on very differing campaigns, Game fair Director Albert Titterington said that while the ARAN’s rally might appeal to some urban dwellers it would go largely unnoticed in the rural community.

Albert Titterington said: “Thousands more will swell the numbers at Birr on Sunday with the call to support the Rural Ireland Says Enough (RISE) ‘Call For Action.’ It will be a surprise to me if ARAN has anything like the numbers they seem to expect - especially at a time when up to 30,000 countryside enthusiasts are enjoying a day in the heart of rural Ireland.”

Des Crofton a spokesman for RISE said :

“RISE came into existence to mount a spirited defence to moves by former Green Party Minister for the Environment John Gormley’s attacks on hunting, particularly against the Ward Union Hunt Club whose hunting he banned.

RISE is seeking to have the promised repeal of the Ward Union ban honoured, the firearms licensing issues addressed and it is monitoring the progress of the animal welfare legislation through both Houses of the Oireachtas. RISE is appealing to all Government TDs to support the reasonable requirements of its large rural support base.”

“At 1.15pm on Sunday 26th, a large contingent of RISE supporters will assemble inside the main entrance to the Castle to be led to the main arena to hear RISE call for action from politicians on core country sports issues. But what is really interesting is that ARAN is holding its own rally in Dublin the same day to make an emotive call for tougher laws on so called animal abuse.”

Commenting on animal welfare Albert Titterington said: “Let me be very clear: as a graduate biologist who has written several significant academic papers on green issues, I am fully aware of the need for best practice regarding animal welfare and the conservation of the Irish countryside. There is no dispute: every sensible person is firmly against animal cruelty and real conservation measures being put in place to preserve the Irish countryside and the rural way of life. But there are some urban based activists involved in tactics and emotive language aimed firmly at rural people, without any real knowledge of the countryside and rural life who seem to offer little. Right minded rural dwellers are already leading the way in conservation and setting standards that are changing agricultural management and animal husbandry for the better.

“It will is significant that RISE goes to their heartland of rural Ireland where people understand the land, the rural traditions and the country lifestyle - and are among the leaders in practical conservation while the animal rights activists take their apparently mixed up messages to an urban base, largely unaware of country traditions or real ‘green’ action already in practice.

Turning to the positive economic impact of the Game Fair at Birr, Albert Titterington said that the rural Midlands would receive a significant boost from country sports followers and their families over the two days of the Birr Fair.

Albert Titterington said: “With a year on year increase in numbers attending Ireland’s biggest game fair at Birr, this year’s Irish Game & Country Fair will see the biggest collection of country sports enthusiasts and their families ever assembled.

Albert Titterington said: “We are confident that granted decent weather last year’s record of 30,000 people will be comfortably beaten, judging by the numbers of pre-event enquiries, including many from outside Ireland and the sheer ‘buzz’ surrounding the event.

“Already reports are coming in of accommodation fully booked within a 30 mile radius of the town. When you add this to the business brought to local traders by visitors to the Fair, the whole area will receive a much needed economic boost at a critical time. Compare that to the cost of policing etc. and the likely disruption to day-to-day Dublin life on account of the ARAN rally and it’s easy to see which group of supporters makes a really positive contribution to Irish life.”

The fair is open from 10,00 – 6.00 each day. Admission ( including free parking and programme) is Adult €15 Families €35. For further details see www.irishgameandcountryfair.com E; irishgamefair@btinternet.con

We have coupled this with the shot of the arena crowd for 2011 which we want beaten by several thousand people this year.

I genuinely hope that people will put personalities aside and show that the Irish country sports community is united on this issue. I know I don't win popularity prizes sometimes because I speak my mind but I don't hold grudges and I don't mind others being equally frank and speaking their mind. So I would issue this challenge to any of the people on this forum who have thought of not attending the rally because of issues with me to put these aside and attend - I am happy to supply them with a free ticket or refund their money to demonstrate that they don't have to contribute to game fair funds by coming. This is too important an opportunity to show a massive unified body of people for it to be compromised by personalities.

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
