PlasticJock 539
After being expelled from school twice, I'm trying to do a part time degree, not just for the qualification but I'd like to study a subject that's always interested me. Now, I have the odd BTEC, NVQ and SVQ, but unfortunately universities require you to have been a good boy throughout school and done GCSE's and A levels, or standards and highers depending on whether you wear a kilt or trousers Well obviously I don't meet the entry requirements however a certain university said there is a degree of flexibility, if you've been working and got a bit of life experience. So I rang them, and was told, basically, no. But I could do an 'Access to' course and progress from there. All at a tidy fee for the university of course. The course is a year full time, and I've got no intention of not working if I can help it, not to mention wasting time on a variety of subjects that would bore me to death. I offered to take the entry test, a literacy and numeracy test, in fact any test they could throw at me I'd take and if I didn't pass I'd accept defeat and do the access course. Cue, ''Um... Uh.... Let me put you on hold'' Followed by ''No sorry... You have to do the required courses...'' Ffs is there any chance of using your brainpower today, or do we all have to follow a useless template of learning that is outdated and clearly doesn't apply to everyone. F**k it, think I'll leave work, sign on and do it.... That's the message we keep getting from the government and these fine establishments.... It pays to be a mong and not bother dragging your arse out of bed in the morning.
j1985 1,984
Two of my mates couldn't get work because all the local jobs were taken by immigrants so they both quit work got benefits and went to uni, both doing well and having the time of their life's! 26 and 27 hanging around with 18 year old girls 24/7. They reckon they're getting more girls than when they worked abroad in Malia and Faliraki haha I'd say go for it.

unlacedgecko 1,467
PJ - I seem to remember from your previous posts that you are ex military. If so, and you have joined but not yet used the Ehanced Learning Credits scheme, the military will pay your uni fees in full. Also, if you are having problems finding a uni, try the Open University, they sometimes have courses which don't require any previous qualifications. It may well be worth looking at unis in England as well. I know a couple of lads doing a Law degree with no previous qualifications. PM me if you want any more info.

PlasticJock 539
Nice one lads, scot I want to do a law degree mate can you imagine me in a courtroom... A wig made of tinfoil I have looked at the OU but something put me off I don't know what. Most uni's now offer distance learning and I'd rather go local as you can go into lectures instead of relying on technology all the time. It just seems a lot of people I've spoken to seem to be the 'old boy' type with that look as if they have a turd taped under their nose. I'm going for it one way or another, if I'm completely honest I'll probably need some financial help along the way even though I'll try and stay in work, and I think that's why it's taken me do long to pull my finger out as I'm too stubborn
littlefish 598
I think it's just a sign of the times - you are competing for university places against all the people who, even though they are younger than you, already have entry level qualifications and even then, there isn't enough places for them. Can you not do the access course at a local college? I know people who have done it part-time at college and then got in that way. Good luck.

Yes mate I can do it at a local collage, the problem is its full time, leaving me unable to work, and also it's a 'humanities' based course meaning I'd go into teaching and allsorts of content that tbh makes me feel most of it is a waste of time. There is a part time LLB course at a local uni, and it's 2 nights a week for 4 years plus I don't require accommodation, so I don't think I'd be that much of a burden on them!! unlacedgecko 1,467
Wait until august and then apply through clearing. If a uni has any spaces they may overlook your lack of quals to fill their course.
