BigRed1 26
I'm going to be a boring old man i know but I'm sorry, Tyson was not as great a boxer as many of the seventies heavyweights. I believe the following would have annihilated him: Frazier, Ali, Norton, Foreman and a few more besides.. He may be the best you lads have seen, but check out the above fighters on Youtube. In my opinion Tyson was great at hammering lesser opponents.-not so good when he was faced with a guy who was prepared to genuinely fight him. The way he deliberately bit Holyfield's ear to get out of the fight and the way he sucked up to Lewis after their fight demonstrates to me he was not a warrior in the same class as say Smokin Joe. That man had as much fight in him as any pitbull. I truly believe Tyson would have capitulated to Frazier both psychologically and physically within two rounds. Ali would have played with him for a few rounds and then finished him. To me Tyson seems a strange guy to admire. Agreed he could knock lesser opponents out but to me he was an out of control nutcase. I couldn't believe the hero worship he received particularly from black people when he came to Britain. Check out the way Frazier and Ali used their positions as prominent sportsmen to do some good in the world. Tyson to me was just lowlife. he unified the world title not bad for a lowlife

Tyson to me was just lowlife. he unified the world title not bad for a lowlife spot on with the most of his opponents, as he did look good knocking out lesser fighters, but when had to step up a higher level, the cracks soon started to show . I liked watching him as was exciting, but he wouldnt have lived with ( Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman), no way.!! even Lewis beat him, and Lewis wouldnt have lasted with these 4 ..!! stabba 10,745
I,d say Tyson,s problem as a fighter was that he had no back up plan..once things werent going his way in the ring then thats when the stupidity started to come to the fore..atb stabba
BigRed1 26
i think tyson lost interest in fighting long before he was beat an when he was at his best lewis wouldnt of got into the ring with him
gonetoearth 5,144
the cracks were showing long before cuss died tyson was a troubled young man going by the books , also he was involved in some serious shit the night of the earbiting incident the attmosphere at the mgm was fiece there was fighting before during and after the fight rival gangs who had hitched onto tyson and holyfield , never before seen in vagas shots fired on the casino floor , gang fights out side the mgm , tyson had become a gang member , a sort of talisman , don king milked him for every penny encoraging his wayword side and using the bad boy image at every oppotunity , the robin givens was introdused to tyson buy guess who , the rest is history , tyson lit up the divsion at one of it lowest times his stlye was a rush in fighter who bullied opponents once this was over come he had no plan b , champion yes a legend
mackel 31
i my self loved tyson i think the press and every one around him helped him on his way to be an animal look at his earlier fights he was a gent after he knock people out lifting them up or talking with them in the ring . as was said earlier in other words he had shown an unwelcome interest in women in his early days and might of been kicked out if he wa s not so promicing honestly i think evander was my hero not to mention champs like ali frazer forman you dont see many boxers fight on for points with a broken jaw these days ali did and lost in points i think thats a true hard fighter and my favourate of all time fighters look good when knocking out can they take it but? ali proved it . gnasher16 31,346
Not another " poor little Mike " topic ......................he was a great prospect but the man wasnt good enough simple as that....its happened before and it will happen again.....make all the excuses for him you like you will never put in what nature left out....and nature left out his heart and desire when the going gets tough !....Mental strength is all part of the game and he had none...... Never in history has a fighter been given more excuses for failure than Tyson has.........as old George Foreman once said when they asked him were the ropes too loose in the Ali fight......." yes the ropes were too loose, the lights were too bright and my shoes were too big............give me every excuse you can i,ll take them all,but everyone who knows boxing knows why i lost "
WILF 49,731
That's a good insight mate, personally I liked him as a crowd pleaser when he fought.....he had a real nasty air about him, but I suppose that is what his management wanted as it undoubtedly sold a lot of tickets. True colours I suppose in the end and just as you say if you think about it, if he could of carried on at a good level then he would have done and earned a few more quid. gnasher16 31,346
What Tyson had on his side ( apart from fantastic speed/power etc ) was he came along at the perfect time.....heavyweight boxing was on its arse in the mid ,s so he was like a breath of fresh air and he carried off the " menacing act " very well........he also came along at a time when us in England could watch boxing for free on mainstream tv meaning even fans who were not really into boxing still got to watch Tysons fights...... I think Tyson is a fascinating character..............but also probably the most overated heavyweight in history.

Attack Fell Terrier 864
If I said it once I've said it a thousand times, Mik Tyson is THE MOST OVER RATED FIGHTER IN HISTORY!!!!!! No doubt he was good at what he done, but he only had one way of fighting and when it didnt work he looked shit. People can make excuses for him all they like but the fact is he never beat anyone of any real note, the better fighters he did fight beat him and he never avenged any of his losses. He was a product of media hype and these clips of him knocking over journeymen does not make him the best ever. The fact is he failed when it mattered.
